Substance Use Recovery Groups Explore - Adolescent Health Education and Development, SURGE AHEAD
SUPP's Group Therapy Program
The Substance Use Prevention Program (SUPP) at Lurie Children's Hospital is offering SURGE-AHEAD, a growth minded group therapy program that is grounded in principles of social cognitive theory, operant conditioning and is aligned with harm reduction principles. SURGE-AHEAD will be offered two times a year: a Winter/Spring cycle and a Fall cycle. Each cycle includes a therapist delivered 12-week group curriculum for youth and a therapist delivered 12-week group curriculum for caregivers. While the youth and parent curriculum are distinct and led by different therapists, the curriculums are complementary; youth and their caregivers engage in parallel sessions. On the same night and time, youth and their caregivers attend their respective groups. By the end of the group, youth and caregivers will have learned new skills to either work towards abstinence or a reduction in use and/or substance use related harms. A key goal for youth and caregivers is to develop a growth minded narrative about substance use and to learn and practice recovery skills. These evidence-based skills of relapse prevention, self-compassion, positive communication, and positive reinforcement have the goal of increasing adolescent-caregiver communication, improving functioning at home and school, and reducing stress.
