Now for the
Painter
1st
Prize - Experimental film
The Wojciech Jerzy Has Kraków
Film School’s SnapFilm Festival
has awarded “Now for the
Painter” 1st Prize
for Experimental film.
SnapFilm Festival is a film competition
aimed at filmmakers around the world. It
is judged in four categories: fiction,
documentary, joke, and experimental and
animation.
The digital seascapes of Now for
the Painter are a tribute to
R.J.W. Turner’s last seascapes. The
project title is from Turner’s piece Now
for the Painter, (Rope) Passengers
Going on Board (Pas-de-Calais), 1827.
This reference was Turner’s homage to
the Dutch painter Aelbert Cuyp. Forster
was intrigued by Turner’s skill with the
brush, and his interest in technology,
and pondered his likely interest in
digital media if he was practicing
today. Forster designed Now for the
Painter with a few simple
guidelines: the original footage would
be manipulated with as few interventions
as possible; the “ships” would be made
from crumpled pages torn from Art
Forum; light and color would be
captured over multiple seasons and
during different times of the day; and
there would be no sound. The result is
both haunting and mesmerizing.
Now
for the Painter at the
Somerville NJ Festival, 2012
This year's festival included four
locations with visual arts, two outdoor
stages where bands alternating between
jazz and rock, an indoor space for
classical music and dance, hands on
workshops, performance art,
demonstrations, and more. Film was
housed in the old firehouse where a rear
projection screen was visible from the
heart of the Festival.
