Hey, friends….
Need some help in knowing what I’m dealing with.

Stinky, messy vent.  We gave her an Epsom salt bath yesterday and separated her from her 5 sisters.  She’s moving around, eating, and drinking some but not like normal.  Slower activity.

She was cleaned up but these photos are this AM from overnight.

Do we do antibiotics or no?
Lynn

If it's whitish fluid that's gag worthy, that's likely vent gleet (cloacitis), which is often caused by overpopulation of yeast. Note that it can have other causes, too.

Or here:

Or here:

Antibiotics will not treat vent gleet (if this is what you have), and different antibiotics treat different conditions in different parts of the body.

Thanks, Jen!

Yes, vent gleet is what we guessed yesterday.  We did the Epsom bath as a means to clean but also help in case she was egg bound.

I’ll read these links and see what we can do today.

Thanks!!!

You're welcome. (All of that with my usual disclaimer that I am not a vet and cannot formally diagnose/treat. 😊)

Just wanted to give everyone (and Jen) an update.  The links below were super helpful.  This is what we did each AM and PM for about 3 days:

  1. Cleaning of the vent and back feathers with mild soap and water.  We trimmed a few early on to make things neater.
  2. Followed by application of anti-fungal (jock itch cream from the grocery store) cream on the vent
  3. A spoonful of plain Greek yogurt.  Turns out she loved it and just pecked it from a plastic spoon.
  4. Added apple cider vinegar to the water

We kept our hen in her own area away from the flock not because vent gleet is contagious, but so that we could monitor her poop more easily and keep her undisturbed and chill.

I’m happy to report she’s doing much better!

Lynn
