Inside Microsoft Research: Internships, Programs and Opportunities

Speaker: Phil Rosenfield
Principal Research Program Manager at Microsoft Research

Wednesday, September 21, 2022

6:00 PM to 7:00 PM CDT

Online Event

Our Sept. 21st joint Chicago and New York City ACM Local Chapter Virtual Presentation, 6 PM CDT, will feature Phil Rosenfield, a Principal Research Program Manager at Microsoft Research. His talk will give you an inside look at Microsoft Research, the various roles, its current early-in-career programs, and answer your questions.

He will give an overview of Microsoft Research (MSR) from his vantage point, his own path to that role from research intern to Research Program Manager, and share interesting programs and roles that currently exist at MSR.

The talk will also highlight the MSR undergraduate research internship, a 12-week summer program, and the Pre-doctoral Research Assistant program which is a one- or two-year program for early career researchers looking to gain experience before entering a PhD program.

Phil Rosenfield is a Principal Research Program Manager within Microsoft Research New England, New York City, and Montreal where much of his focus is at the intersection of machine learning and biology and healthcare as part of MSR New England’s Biomedical ML group. He is one of the leads of the Undergraduate Research Internship program, a program for early career researchers who are passionate about technology and offer diverse perspectives. He also manages the MSR New England and NYC Pre-doctoral Research Assistant program.

Phil Rosenfield started his involvement with Microsoft Research (MSR) as intern while in graduate school. At MSR he helped build the first digital planetarium to project the WorldWide Telescope (WWT) which led to him becoming director of the WWT for the American Astronomical Society.

Prior to MSR, he was an NSF Astronomy and Astrophysics Postdoctoral Fellow at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, a postdoctoral researcher at the Universita degli studi di Padova, and earned a PhD in astronomy from the University of Washington. At Harvard, he used data from the Hubble Space Telescope to constrain, in a fully probabilistic framework, uncertain physics in stellar evolution models.

He has also taught astronomy, science communication, science teaching pedagogy, software engineering skills to scientists, and have been deeply involved in inclusion and equity programming. You can find his astronomy publications on ADS.
