What do the buyers of a high-end GPU, a Windows 11 capable motherboard or laptop, a new car or even a laundry dryer all have in common? All these consumers – which might include you – have to wait for perhaps a week for a common CPU, a few weeks for a dryer, a month for that blistering GPU, two months for those laptops and cars, when just a few years ago it could be a matter of days. And whether it’s Lenovo, ASUS, LG, or Ford, all these companies in turn wait for the chips from the semiconductor foundries to finish what you are waiting for.

The great chip shortage, the subject of this talk, is a very current topic of discussion, in which the demand for integrated circuits is greater than the supply, impacting several industries and has led to major shortages and queues amongst consumers for video cards, video game consoles, cars and other electrical devices. This talk will give some background information plus a historical perspective as well.
