Personal Project: Spotify Search

Spotify, the online audio streaming service, has a huge music catalog. It’s more of a surprise of what it doesn’t have then what it does have! The downside is that users need to know what they are looking for in order to find it. Without artist, composer, or title data, users only have the limited User Interface which tends to steer users to popular choices.

The goal for this project is to use the music catalog data extracted with the Spotify API to present more listening options to the end-user. And with that data, is it reasonable to create a virtual “music buff” to guide listeners to music beyond their personal knowledge?

The talk will discuss the mechanical requirements to retrieving the data, how to store it, how domain experts can create useful relations so that a listener is guided to unfamiliar as well as known territory. As this is an independent project, an idle pursuit as it is, we’ll talk about why it can be valuable to work on your own projects.

Speaker:
In addition to being Vice-Chair of the Chicago ACM for many years, Marc has worked in a number of application development situations that have included full-stack, a natural language-like project and software tools among other projects. One of his favorite projects, was using an NLP-like approach to correct the artist/composer and title inconsistencies in a large music database for a classical music radio station, WFMT.

Currently working at S&C Electric he also teaches Game Design and Scripting at Columbia College Chicago which has led him to become more proficient in digital media, game engines, video, and audio editing.
