Dear friends,
Over the past seven years, anti-eviction activists have worked to rehab and occupy a foreclosed apartment building on Chicago's South Side, turning it into a hub for community activism, support for homeowners and tenants facing foreclosure, as well as emergency housing for the city's growing homeless population. In a neighborhood where dozens of bank-owned buildings remain boarded up and abandoned, this community resource center has stood out as an example of how residents can turn blighted properties into neighborhood assets.
Instead of welcoming these efforts, officials from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development have repeatedly sought to evict our local activists from this property. For seven years, anti-eviction activists have fended off these efforts, only to have our efforts undercut by Safeguard Properties, a property management company hired by HUD and CitiBank that has repeatedly broken into the building and stolen our office and rehab equipment. Just a few weeks ago, a sheriff's eviction followed by another Safeguard Properties break-in left our activists facing the possibility of having to walk away from this property.
In spite of these obstacles, we are not giving up. With your support, we are demanding that HUD donate this property to one of our partner organizations that it can continue to serve as a hub for community service efforts.
All we need is your help!
