As Barbara Campbell fights to survive one medical disaster after another-- heart surgery, loss of kidney function, and cancer-- Flagstar Bank is trying to evict her from her Detroit home.

Ms. Campbell applied in 2013 for a hard-ship modification to the mortgage loan she got from Flagstar in 2006. The bank had since sold the mortgage to Fannie Mae, the federally run mortgage company that claims to honor such requests.

Barbara, a former director for the Girl Scouts, was still making her monthly payments when the company servicing the mortgage for Fannie Mae told her she could stop paying during the modification review. The servicer (“Nationstar”) then suddenly foreclosed, citing her “failure” to make payments.

That led to a Sheriff’s Sale and numerous property transfers between Fannie Mae, Flagstar, and Nationstar. It’s now unclear which of them holds the property, but it’s undeniably Flagstar that is seeking a court order to evict Ms. Campbell.

Flagstar claims to be a “community” bank, but it’s actually owned by a New York company that Forbes Magazine has described as a leading “Vulture Investor.”  The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau charged the bank in 2014 with “illegally blocking borrowers’ attempts to save their homes.” Flagstar agreed to pay $37 million in penalties and promised to stop denying loan modifications to qualified homeowners.

There is a simple remedy for the injustice done to Ms Campbell: Flagstar, Fannie Mae, and Nationstar should immediately halt the eviction and make sure her mortgage is restored at an affordable level.

Please call Flagstar Bank at 248-312-5400 and tell them to stop the eviction and join with Nationstar and Fannie Mae to restore Ms. Campbell’s mortgage. Press prompt for Headquarters and ask for Tony Monte. Refer to Loan 0596526028. Ms. Campbell lives at 1001 Covington Drive #3 in Detroit.
Please also call Fannie Mae at 1-800-232-6643, Press 3, choose language, then Press 4 to report fraud. Fannie will claim it doesn’t own the property any longer, that it is held by Nationstar or Flagstar. These have been contractors for Fannie Mae, and Fannie is therefore responsible for their deceptive practices.
