VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR CHICAGO OPEN
We are looking for one or two people to be assistants to the tournament director (that’s me!) for the Chicago Open.
We need one person for Saturday and one for Sunday, or the same person for both days.
Tasks will include such things as…
- keeping the room quiet.
- bringing any disputes or questions to my attention.
- helping players log onto Leago and report their game results.
- keeping me informed of games that are still in progress at the end of each round.
- coordinating with the hotel staff to keep the bathrooms clean and stocked… you get the idea.
Free lunch and dinner will be provided for the volunteers.
If you are interested, but only want to volunteer for part of a day, that’s fine too.
We are also looking for at least two people to volunteer as streaming monitors to help Chris Garlock, who will be live streaming the top 6 boards in the Open section.
Duties will include…
- setting up player names on the electronic boards.
- monitoring games played on the electronic boards, helping make sure that the moves are being properly recorded. We need to make sure that if/when the boards beep because of a misplaced stone, that the players stop and fix the stone; if they continue playing without fixing it, we'll lose the game record -- and thus the live stream -- and won't be able to fix it. This is most common A) among players who new to using the boards and B) towards the end of the game, when the board fills up and players are short on time.
- standing by to end the game recording once the players agree the game is finished, so that they can adjust and count the board.
- reporting the results to Chris so he can update the stream.
And finally…
We also need some volunteers to help us set up for the tournament on Friday, May 23 from 3 - 6 PM.
This will include moving tables and chairs, setting up boards, stones and table numbers, setting the clocks, displaying the trophies and prizes, etc.
It’s actually a lot of fun, and we typically all go out for dinner afterwards.
Please contact me directly at ma...@evanstongoclub.org if you are interested in volunteering for any of these activities.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR ACEN
The Evanston Go Club will be teaching Go at Anime Central again this year, as we have for over a decade! ACen is the largest anime convention in the midwest, with over 36,000 attendees last year. https://www.acen.org Of course, we don’t get that many interested in Go, but we typically teach more than 100 people over two days.
I’m looking for volunteers to help from 10 AM to 6 PM (or later, depending on interest) on Friday and Saturday, May 16 and 17. (That’s the weekend before the Chicago Open). You don’t need to spend all day; you can come for as long or short as you want. We will teach beginners on 9 x 9 boards, and there will be a 1-hour 9 x 9 tournament on Saturday at 5 PM.
Please contact me directly at ma...@evanstongoclub.org if you’re interested.
