My two research students are working on Windows and one has a Nov 2024 version of CLAN and one has 5th Feb 2025.

The one with the earlier version of CLAN can see line numbers and choose to show them on all lines, or only on speaker lines.

The one with the later version can’t see line numbers at all.

I’m asking them to use Goldfield’s 2000 pragmatic coding system, which is a subset of the INCA-A system, and code the same number of utterances per file on different files -which is obviously harder when you can’t see line numbers, and easier when you can see numbers for each utterance.

Is there a way to either a) see line numbers on the latest version or b) get them both on the same version?

Meanwhile I am using Clan-C 6th Feb 2025 (but I’m not coding on this machine because it is too unwieldy to do this on a Mac) and can see line numbers for every line but with no option to only see line numbers on the speaker lines.

Is there an option for CLAN-C to do this?

Thanks

Katie

Hi,

On the Mac there only one option for line numbers. Every line has a line number.

On Windows PC you can either number every line or just speaker lines.

On Both Mac and Windows PC the line numbering is not done by default. You have to first select "Mode->Show line numbers" menu.

I have just double checked the latest Windows PC version to make sure that line numbering work correctly and it does on my Windows PC.

Thanks Leonid

I’m on my Mac so I can’t check the Windows commands but we tried the exact same commands on the Nov, Dec and Feb versions and only on the Nov version does the command work as we want it to (one number per line).

I’ll get my students to send me some screenshots of what they are doing  and pass them along.

Katie

On Windows PC you need to use menu "Edit->Define line numbers" to choose "Number every line" checkbox in the dialog box that will pop-up.

Those setting are sticky, so if you quit CLAN completely and re-start it the settings will remain the same.
