Hi Sebastian,

If you use +sxxx option you will get the result you want. The MLU counts words on %mor tier and xxx is never entered on %mor tier. The manual entry you are referring to is a typo it should have read +sxxx.

You can easily test this by coping following 6 lines into a file and running commands "mlu filename.cha" and "mlu +sxxx filename.cha" to see the results.

*CHI: one xxx two .
%mor: det:num|one det:num|two .
%gra: 1|2|DATE 2|0|INCROOT 3|2|PUNCT
*CHI: three four five .
%mor: det:num|three det:num|four det:num|five .
%gra: 1|2|QUANT 2|3|DATE 3|0|INCROOT 4|3|PUNCT

Hello!

I am trying to come up with a command that will give me the MLU in words for a file containing utterances with xxx.
I would like the command to count words that are on the same *CHI line with xxx, but not include xxx itself toward the MLUw.
I tried to use the -sxxx switch that was mentioned in the manual (screenshot attached), but was getting the error message, "Utterances containing "xxx" are excluded by default. Excluding "xxx" is not allowed."

We are currently using: mlu +t*CHI +leng +sxxx -t%mor *.cha

Any advice would be appreciated!

-Sebastian
