Hello dear CLAN users,

I'm having my students install CLAN to use in our Child Language class
and a few of them are having problems that I haven't encountered
before. I wonder if any of you can give me some advice.

A few students using Macs are not able to install CLAN at all. The
disk image downloads correctly and the installer appears to run
successfully but the CLAN program is nowhere to be found on the
computer. One student had OS 10.4 and the other two had 10.5. I've
installed the most recent version successfully on two different Macs,
so I can't figure out why it isn't working for them. Does anyone know
if there's some setting on their computers that might be preventing a
correct installation?

The other problem is with installing CLAN on a PC. The installer
automatically looks for the C:\ drive but quits automatically if the
hard drive is named with any letter other than C:. Is there a way to
tell the installer to put the program on a differently-named drive?

Many thanks for your help.
- Catherine Anderson.

Catherine,

One thing I can think of is that if Mac users had CLAN app installed in
some other location than /Applications, then installer will try to replace
that old CLAN app in that old location instead of putting it in
/Applications/CLAN folder. This is strange, but it is how Apple's installer
works. So, make sure that there aren't any CLAN apps on the computer first,
before running installer. If this still fails, then you can get a zip
version of CLAN from http://childes.psy.cmu.edu/clan/clan.zip and install it
manually.

On PC, during installation process, after you double click on
clanwin.exe installer, you will get to panel called "Destination Folder". It
is the second panel you will see after pressing "Next >" button. Here on the
right there is a button "Change..". Click on that button and select a
different folder to install CLAN in.

Leonid.

This is a follow up to a question that Catherine Anderson asked earlier
about installer on Macs. It turns out that when we updated our systems to
Snow Leopard the installer application has stopped working consistently. I
have re-written Mac installer and it should be working correctly now. If you
have tried to install CLAN on Mac in the last two weeks, I would suggest
that you get the new version of CLAN from childes web site and re-install it
again. It is possible that previous installer has failed without giving you
any error messages.

Leonid.
