Portable version of CLAN

Hi

Is it possible to make a portable version of CLAN (i.e. which runs off a USB stick?) I'm teaching CLAN in computing clusters where software is not regularly updated, and therefore the version of CLAN is often out of date. It would be much simpler to have a version which can be run off a USB stick. This would also help students by allowing them to work on almost any computer across the campus.

I created a portable prototype by copying the CLAN folder from 'Programs' (under windows) to a USB stick. I run clan by clicking on CLAN.exe. At first glance, it seems to run okay, but there are some bizarre quirks. For example, when I run a mor analysis, and open the file, I cannot see the 'mor' tiers.

Nick,

The instruction in 0hide.cut file are for the version of CLAN that the 0hide.cut file came with. We have changed that format few years ago and newer versions of CLAN require 0hide.cut file to have different format. Try changing 0hide.cut file by putting # character at the beginning of the line.

The speed of the program is not an issue. The most important consideration is to provide a flexible computing environment for the students so that they can work on most campus terminals. However, according to the instructions this shouldn't hide any tiers.

What I could do in future years is insist that the students download their own copy onto their own laptop, and then make sure that there is a single computer lab where we check to make sure that CLAN is completely updated. Any student not working on their own laptop would need to work in this lab.

CLAN can be run from any storage area. Running it from USR stick will make the program run very slow, because CLAN has to access files, either data or preferences, very often. When CLAN is installed for the first time its working directory and its library are set to location where it was installed. To make CLAN work correctly in any other installation location you need to make sure that directories in "Commands" window are set to the right location.

If you ran MOR command successfully without CLAN giving you any error message, then %mor tiers should be in the output file. Clan has an option of hiding some tiers when displaying a file. Try opening output file with Notepad or MS Word or any plain text editor. If you see %mor tiers, then CLAN has just simply hidden them when opening file in CLAN. Look in "Commands" window next to "lib" button to see where the library files are. In that directory there will be file "0hide.cut". It is possible that is has an older format that is incompatible with the new CLAN. This is why CLAN should never be copied, but instead installed using CLAN installer.  That file should look like this:

The other thing you can do is to place CLAN installer on USR stick and have students install CLAN on their computers from USR stick.

     I think it would be best for you to respond.  I would have said that this is only a problem on Windows, not Mac.  I am not sure how to address it on Windows.  Maybe you have an idea.  If not, you could point out to him that he could put the installer on the USB and then students could install from there.
