Hello everyone!

CLAN newbie here, working on coding morphosyntactic errors - wondering if there is a recommended method for coding finiteness errors in English when it isn't clear whether the missing morpheme should be 3rd person -s or past tense -ed?

And more generally, what would be the best way to code for errors that don't have an assigned error code in the manual? (for example we are also interested in coding referential cohesion)

Apologies if this is obvious or something I might have missed. Any suggestions/pointing to resources is appreciated!

Kind regards,

Dear Elisa,

It is perfectly fine to make up any new error codes that you find important. As long as you put the code into the [* xxx] format where xxx corresponds to you new code, CHECK will be happy and programs such as FREQ will have no problem finding and counting your code. To make sure things are working, just enter a few cases of your new code in a sample file, run CHECK and then run FREQ to count the occurrences.
