Brie,

Yes, many of the CLAN programs allow for inclusion of the +z switch which allows you to delimit the range of the utterances you wish to include.

Thanks Brian! If she wants to create a new "set" of files with just the first 200 utterances - is there a way to do that? I know "trim" but that's just for tiers -- wasn't sure if there was something like a "cut" function similar to what +z does. I'll look into this with her!

Try command:

kwal +o@ +o% +z200u +d +f  filename.cha

It will create output CHAT file "filename.kwal.cex" with 200 utterances.

Yes, if she is starting with a *.cha file, she can use the +z +d and +f in KWAL. Check section 14.13 in the CLAN manual for details on +z.
