Hi, when we try to download CLAN, we have a warning message that "http://dali.talkbank.org/clan/clanwin.exe" is a harmful site. The security software then doesn't let us install the program.

I told the students to bypass the message and manually install the program but one student reported her laptop is not booting after installing CLAN. I do trust the site and the maintenance of the program but wonder how I could ease the concern about the warning message. If it matters, the virus screening program is Korean native, nothing like symantec but something called Ahn Lab. Almost every Koreans have this program installed on their PC without realizing it being installed.

Dear Eon-Suk,
Given the good job that South Korea did with controlling the pandemic after the initial outbreak, I am not surprised that Korean software is demanding in this way.  It is possible that it is complaining about the fact that the dali.talkbank.org site uses only http: and not secure https: .  The other talkbank sites such as https://childes.talkbank.org use the https and are secure.  We really should update the dali site for security.  Leonid Spektor will be the person to give the best information on this and I guess he will chime in soon.  He may be able to give you better information.

Best,

Hi,

We had reports once in a while that some virus protection software are very sensitive to CLAN installer. We tell people to overwrite software. You mentioned that only one student's laptop does not boot up. If CLAN was causing this then everyone who installed CLAN would experiences this problem. Computer viruses are not as selective as live ones are and infect everyone equally. If other students do not have the same problem after installing CLAN, then the one student who is experiencing the problem must have some other issue with that laptop.

Yes, I totally agree. I assured the student that while I feel sorry it is most likely because of another reason given I myself re-installed the program but have no issue.

Thanks for the prompt and helpful response, as always. I hope everyone on this list stays healthy.
