Hi,
Forgot if I told everyone that the Fair Trade Holiday Expo on Nov. 13th in Burlington, Wi was a huge success.
We were swamped from 10-12.  We have great advertising.  Facebook turned out to be a great way to get the word out.  There was an article about me and Fair Trade which was a bit uncomfortable for me but if it gets them to come I will take one for the team.  I like doing things anonymously if possible for some reason.

Also, I gave a powerpoint yesterday at church on the Chiapas stove project.  We sold coffee and Women's Bean project like mad after that.  I should talk every month!!
I quoted Brian, YOU CAN NEVER UNSEE SOMETHING.  Best quote around.  Thanks Brian.
Merry Christmas everyone.

Hey Katie,

Can you share your powerpoint and any notes you used for the Stove
project presentation? I bet people at my church would be interested.

Thanks,
Brian

Bonus trivia: I got that quote from Arundhati Roy. An amazing woman
and author of Power Politics among others. The whole quote appears
to go like this:

"... in the midst of putative peace, you could, like me, be
unfortunate enough to stumble on a silent war. The trouble is that
once you see it, you can't unsee it. And once you've seen it, keeping
quiet, saying nothing, becomes as political an act as speaking out.
There's no innocence. Either way, you're accountable."

Hi, Chiapas travelers,

Agreed!  Best quote from our trip.  We like the fuller quote supplied by Brian even more.

How do we stand on further contributions for the stove project?  The Fellowship from First Congregational UCC, Fort Worth, recently sent $420 to Spiritus Christi for four more stoves.  It is our understanding from Bob Campbell that another delegation from Spiritus Christi will be visiting Simojovel at the end of January -- and will be taking further funds for stoves at that time.

A blessed and peaceful Christmas to all!

Han and John

I read this part first and then did my power point.
Katie

Here it what I read first:

When I went down to Chiapas, Mexico just about 2 years ago, Bryan from my trip said, YOU CAN NEVER UNSEE SOMETHING.  I have found this to be very true.  What I saw was quite upsetting.  So upsetting that I am not sure if I can go back down to Chiapas.  By upsetting I mean that I was able to see exactly how much I have compared to how little other people have.  Sometimes now I find myself looking around my house and seeing how much stuff/clutter I have accumulated over the years.  I feel ashamed for all I have compared to what they have.

A lot of times I find myself convincing myself that I NEED something.  Ie.  A vacation home up north, a new pair of tennis shoes because my other shoes are looking a bit dingy, another dog, more flowers for my garden, the list goes on and on.  Over the past two years I have watched myself buy things that are probably not a real need but a want.  I can buy things that are wants because the United States offers me a life full of abundance.  There is not as much abundance in Chiapas so many times the people are not able to take care of actual needs.  The Chiapas Stove project helps us help the people take care of one basic need, the need for safe, healthier cooking rooms.
