Hi everyone,

Long time no talk to... Hope you are all doing well and involved in exciting and productive endeavors.

I am in the process of putting together another trip to Mexico, this time to Oaxaca (just north of Chiapas), and the theme this time is Immigration. More precisely, we will look at some of the economic and political factors that drive people to leave their homes and villages and travel a thousand miles to go to a country that hates them in order to find a job or get an education (or to join a family member who has already done that).

I think it will be a pretty important and challenging trip, maybe even life changing for some people. And I need your help.

Down below I've pasted in a portion of our promotional web page about the trip (and click here to go to the longer page). Look it over; it's going to be good.

It covers some of the same issues we looked at before (like how the collapse of prices drove farmers into poverty) but we will focus more tightly on how all of that impacts migration into the US. Since the US House has postponed action on an immigration bill until (probably) after the turn of the year, this topic will feel extraordinarily timely when we are looking at it from the point of view of the migrant seeking to come here.

So, my questions of you are two:

First, would you be interested in going yourself? It would be great to see some of you again for something like a reprise of our days together.

And, second, do you know of someone else who you think might be interested? The best way to promote something like this is by word of mouth. People who have already traveled on one of my delegations tend to be the best advertisement for others considering it.

Any help you can give will be graciously (and lovingly) appreciated.

Blessings,

Stan

P.S. If you look real close, you'll see that most of the pictures I used for the web page were actually taken in Chiapas, not Oaxaca, but those were all I had to use. Some of you just became famous .

Looking for the Roots of Migration

A Life-changing Journey to Oaxaca, Mexico, searching for the economic and political forces that "push" migration into the US.

February 17?26, 2014

Explore first-hand the economic and political roots of the migration of millions of Latin Americans into the US. What causes people to uproot themselves from their histories and homelands and take the long, painful, costly and dangerous journey into a foreign land where they seldom know the language and are often greeted with hostility?

We will explore this question experiencing the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca, where many of the forces for migration are stark and clear. Oaxaca is a beautiful state of 2 million people. You will fall in love with the people, the land, and their history. Yet nearly half of the Oaxacan population has left the state for the United States.

 What to Expect:
  • See the real reasons for migration to the U.S.
  • Stay in the homes of families directly impacted by their relatives? migration North.
  • Gain knowledge of ways US policy affects migration patterns
  • Meet people resisting NAFTA and other ?free? trade policies.
  • Visit a local shelter for migrants moving to or from the US
  • Meet with returned migrants who have experienced life in the US justice system
  • Visit a local women?s cooperative that provides alternatives to migration
  • Discuss ways to act in solidarity with people from Oaxaca and immigrants here in the US

 Cost:
$950 + airfare (arranged on your own).
This covers all of your expenses ?on the ground? in Oaxaca,  including transportation,
food, lodging, and translation. Scholarships and fundraising opportunities are available.

It is so good to hear from you.  I hope all is well with everyone!  I would love to go but I think I would get all upset again.  That last trip was such an eye opener for me.  I still have not felt that I was able to do much with what I learned which is frustrating.  I guess, to look at the bright side, we were able to help the coop buy stoves.  I also have more information to give people when they say things about the Mexican people who have moved illegally to the US.
I will send this information to my church and see if anyone would like to go.
Thanks,
Katie Simenson

Thanks Katie,
Good to hear from you too.
I don't think I did this with the first mailing, but since you are considering sending the information to your church, I've enclosed this time a printable flyer about the trip which you can mail out or post.
Best,

Stan
