Hi everyone,
Following up on the CHIANTI release earlier this week, I give some more details about the IDL updates.
The routines that have been updated or added are given at the end of this message.
The most significant to users are changes to the synthetic spectrum and level population calculations to speed them up. Several routines were modified, including ch_synthetic, ch_ss, pop_solver, ch_load_ion_rates and matrix_solver. Populations are now calculated about a factor five faster. The /lookup option in ch_synthetic/ch_ss is now about a factor two faster. See Sect. 8 of CHIANTI Technical Report 3 for more information about the speed of ch_synthetic calculations.
The level population matrix equations are solved with matrix_solver, and this now uses la_lusol instead of invert (both built-in IDL routines). CHIANTI Technical Report 15 has more details about this important change.
An error was found in gofnt that prevented contribution functions being computed for some lithium-like ions (e.g., O VI, Fe XXIV). This has been fixed.
There are three routines with "iso" in the name that are used to look at how atomic data changes along isoelectronic sequences, which is useful for identifying problems in the CHIANTI models.
Thanks, Peter
