Our group now has over 60 members, and I think a few introductions would help us get to know each other and benefit from this network.

As an introduction to the group, several of us in Chiang Mai, Thailand started this as an email list in order to share information about orality events happening in this area. However, the list has grown and it now seems that much of what we post here is of interest beyond just Chiang Mai, so the scope has widened. At the moment, I am the owner of the group, and Larry Dinkins and Dan Edwards are managers. If anyone else has experience with Google Groups and would like to help out, just speak up!

Any member of the group can post comments or start new topics, either on the webpage, or via email by writing to chiang-mai-or...@googlegroups.com. You can also direct others to our group, but one of the managers needs to approve or invite all new members.

If you receive this at more than one address, let me know which one you'd like to have removed. You can also manage your own settings from the website yourself. If you are not able to access the website due to security issues at your location, you can email one of the managers directly and ask us to adjust your settings for you any time you want to make a change.

Please reply to this email with an introduction of yourself. Some of you work in sensitive areas, so feel free to give yourselves nicknames or use other pseudonyms to maintain the boundaries you need to keep. Even those this is a closed group, by invitation only, not everyone subscribed is using a secure email address, so keep that in mind, and treat each other's information with care.

Having said that, this group will be much more effective and useful to all if we get to know each other and know who we are talking to. So, please share a little about your background in storying and orality, how you are using or hope to use these tools in your ministry, and anything else you can think of that would interest the rest of us!

Thanks!

Mimi

I'll start the round of introductions.

I'm Mimi, and I live in Chiang Mai. I am the coordinator for orality and storying for the SIL work in this region. That means I help to provide training and other resources for projects in five countries, this one and four of our neighbors. I'm the first one to fill this role for our group, so I am still learning what the job is and how to do it best. I really appreciate input and ideas from other people doing storying as that helps me a lot while I figure out what I am doing. I travel a fair amount, and visit and correspond with people who are working in areas far more sensitive than Chiang Mai, so I need to be careful about details that I share online.

Most of our projects are being done through the OneStory partnership, and using that model. My own training is primarily in OneStory, but I have also participated in some STS events. I'd love to learn more about some of the other models that are being used well in various areas.

I'm also enrolled in Biola University's degree program in Intercultural Studies with an emphasis in Orality, so I get to take classes (and write papers) on the topic twice a year through the extension program hosted here in Chiang Mai.

I'm excited about the interest in storying in this part of the world and keen to build networks and relationships that help all of us be more effective.

Who wants to go next with the introductions?

Mimi

Hi Mimi,

This should be a helpful group/network.  Thanks for initiating it.

Question:  I saw the recent VDO trailer made in India that Larry D. put on this sight.  It might work for me.  I'm back in the US now for 3 months and will be speaking at various places real soon.  I'm looking for a VDO clip from SE Asia (if possible) that demonstrates storying and/or the reasons why.  If I were a "technocrat" I would have video'd some of our own sessions where my partner, Phaka, is storying, but I'm not - I don't even think of that!

Would love to be able to show a portion of a video along this line.  Do you know of any?

Blessings to you,

Ginny

Hello!
I'm Theresa Frazier and serve in Dumaguete, Philippines.  I teach English using God's Word in the mountains here in the public schools.  I've attended 4 STS workshops so far, 1 of them being advanced training in Bangkok where I met some of you.  So far I've only gotten to use STS on a pedicab (5-min) and at devotions with the staff here.  I can tell they really like the interaction but unfortunately we only have 30minutes to teach.  I'm hoping I can use this with my next batch of kids in grade 6.  I'm currently working on Matt 19:16-22 to keep in my heart pocket.
Nice to meet you all.  God bless!

Nathaniel,

Hope you're doing well.  I think we talked several months back and I let you know that I was putting a proposal together to try to get a grant to purchase a several thousand MegaVoice players.  Just wanted to give you an update.  We got a grant, but they did not give funding toward MegaVoice.  This was a disappointment for me, because I think that MegaVoice could be a strategic tool to reach Thailand.   Just wanted to let you know.  I apologize for not communicating earlier.

Thanks for the email.  Hope we can work together in the future in some way on this.

For His Glory,

Greetings all,

Per Mimi's suggestion, I'll jump in here.

I'm Ginny Bellamy living in Surin Province, NE Thailand working among Northern Khmer speakers.  Last year we completed an initial set of chron stories (OneStory) in Northern Khmer and are using them in the villages and towns where NK speakers live, primarily in Buriram, Surin and Srisaket Provinces.  There is a song for each story and both stories and songs are recorded on a CD.  People are interested, want to hear more, but no churches yet.

Very interested in hearing how other chron storying is being received, particularly in Thailand and in Cambodia.

May His glory fill the earth,

Ginny

Dear lovers of oral arts,

Jo here. I serve a minority people group in East Asia. Right now I am working on learning their language through doing grammatical analysis. They do not have officially approved orthography. For many years now, I am a music person not doing music, but an amateur linguistic person doing a lot of linguistics. About 2 years ago, I received my first intensive 4-day Story Telling Workshop and came to realise my great interest in oral arts. My experience in story telling/oral arts is very limited, but I experience a lot of transfer from music to it. I just hope to learn more. Stop for now.

Hi ya’ll

Marianne Chiong here from the Philippines.  Several of you have introduced yourself and requested more introductions.  Not sure if I can remember everybody.

Anyway, I work with our team in the Philippines in translation, literacy and Bible storying.  I took my first Onestory and STS in Dallas in 2008 and got so sold on oral Bible storying that we made an adapted version for our minority groups in the Philippines.  We call it simply the Word STW.  Our focus is on training trainers who can train trainers in story telling.

We have experimented with making a training program on video, developing more original songs for each story etc.  All I can say is oral Bible storying seems to be one of the most effective methods to get the Word into the hearts of the people and enable non-literate people to share the word with confidence.  At the same time lives are being transformed and people won into the kingdom.  I hope I can come to Chiang Mai some day soon to learn more about story telling. This is all for today, Blessings, Marianne

Hi all

Utomo here from TWR Indonesia.  Went to Chiang Mai mid last year to learn about Onestory, and it was just a confirmation on what I have already believed that orality is a very important part in sharing the Gospel in Asian context, especially Indonesian context , both for the literates and illiterates alike.

Still trying to learn more about how to do the Onestory concepts in my work in TWR.  Will try get in touch with our partners.

Really happy to have this forum as a place to share and learn.

Thank you

Dear Mimi,

I am a recipient of the Orality Network. I went into my friend Steve
Penner today in the country where I am working. Steve does not know
about the orality network till I introduced it to him. He is currently
involved in storying, and is very interested in joining our network. I
have already forgotten the way how we put our names in the list. Would
you be happy to add in his name to the list? His e-mail address is in
this mail. I am sure he will enjoy all our cyber conversation and have a
lot to contribute. Thanks for doing this.

Hello all,

Sorry the network has been dormant lately. I have been quite busy with my primary assignment, and it appears no one else has had news that they wanted to post. Maybe this is a good time for all of us to bring each other up to date on what we are doing in storying.

Dear Mimi and coworkers in Bible storytelling,

There were several members of the Chiang Mai Orality Network who were interested in knowing when I had finished the Bible storytelling and discussion series. It is done! It is called StoryFire and it is a freely available through the internet. StoryFire includes 25 audio lessons (almost all less than 5 minutes) and is demonstrated via 4 distinctly different models (YouTube). We (MAF) has released it under Creative Commons copywriter which is very liberal in allowing others to use, translate and modify the material, as long as credit is given to the original work.  Attached is an HTML flyer. And here is the link:

I am glad that you now have a bit of time to energize dialog around this topic.

Hi all,

The group is not changing. But it has been dormant for a while. I have been very busy and traveling a lot. However, any member can post to the group at any time! So please do that and share your news.

Here is a bit of news. Next week the Global Commission on Music and Missions will be meeting here in Chiang Mai. One of the tracks is "Orality and the Arts". There will be six one hour workshops in this track, in addition to the plenary sessions. I am organizing three of these and Larry Dinkins is handling the other three.

If you want to know more, go to http://www.gcommhome.org/ and click on the link for 2015 Event Information. There is also a link for registration.

Dear Chiang Mai Group,

I, Regina Manley, host a monthly session called “Best Field Practices” where people who teach and/or use a variety of oral strategies (most do some form of Bible storytelling and discussion) gather to share what is working, what is new, or what has been learned through experience with one another.
Most are trainers, some are academics, others implementing these new strategies in their field of service. Once month we gather via VSEE and someone shares for about 30 minutes followed by Q&A or general discussion time. Attached is a flyer with information.

My question is, would someone(s) from this group be willing to share about their ministry and experience in August or September? Also, anyone interested would be welcome to join. Please contact me if you are interested.
