listed for informational purposes and because they are loads of fun. The
groups holding events at the Autonmous Zone such as Food Not Bombs,
Lesbian Avengers and Narcotics Anonymous are wholly independant
organizations. We are honored by their presence and blessed with their
support.

We're Moving But We Don't Know Where (or When)

The Autonomous Zone was planning to move by June 1st at the request of
our current landlord (whose license plates read "REHAB IT -- sucka). Our
lease is up but the kindly landlord could not get the financing he
needed
to open his bagel shop (or whatever the hell he wanted to do there) so
our move to another Westown Location has been postponed. Until then, we
are
still keeping our eyes and ears open for a better space. Of course, we
remain open wed - sat noon to 8 pm and later on nights of special events.

A-Zone Business Update

The Autonomous Zone is organized by a collecive that meets weekly to
address the conining necessity of operating the space. The collective
comes together in small committees to take care of much of the
businesslike aspects of our operation. The A-zone is open to anyone who
wants to participate in many different ways besides attending meetings:
staffing the space, organizing
and attending events, or working on committees.
Should you decide to get more involved, this document features an update
of different elements which make up tjhe A-zone.

A-Zone Collective

Ten to fifteen people tend to attend the tuesday collective meetings. The
meetings begin with Check-In during which everyone gets a chance to let
everyone know how they are feeling and what's been on their mind. The
agenda is always open. We are currently using a very informal system of
self-facilitation. Decisions are made by consensus - everyone must agree
with the decision or we will either; continue to discuss the issue, put
it off to a later date or request that a smaller group study the issue
further and
prepare one or more proposals towards resolving the issue. These methods
have been successful for us since we began.

The Financial Committee

This group keeps track of the, can you guess? fiscal matters. They also
collect monthly pledges, write grant applications and appraise the
collective of the A-zone's perpetually precarious financial status.

Outreach Committee

This group is currently engaging in the development of a comprehensive
outreach plan. This includes several "How-To" documents about doing
outreach for the A-Zone and its events. They produce the monthly
calendar, organize monthly flyering days in various neighborhoods,
encourage tabling and flyering at events and promote greater connections
between the neighborhood/other groups and the A-Zone.

Distribution Committee

These exciting people order new literature, maintain our supply of
pamphlets, flyers and 'zines and keep track of consignments. And that's
not all! They are also as cute as buttons. There, now we will see if they
ever read the calendar.

Our Hopes for You and This Document?

If you live in close enough to us to attend these events, you probably
won't need to use the internet to check us out. If you do live in our
area, or will be passing through soon, please consider stopping by. But
this info is also posted here for raw informational purposes. Similar
groups in other places may find some ideas or inspiration, or may be
able to warn us in time that a bake-sale is a VERY BAD IDEA or the like.

If you'd like to get an e-mail version of this calendar, mail us to be
added to one of our electronic mailing lists.

What is the Autonomous Zone?
The A-Zone is a community center for "radical political information and
action." Our collectively run store-front infoshop features a lending
library (with books, videos, and zines) and new books and zines available
for a donation. The A-Zone hosts the Free Skool (more on this later),
educational and social events, and has meeting space for groups and
collectives. The A-Zone is organized with heaping spoonfuls of
cooperation
-- and lots of them. We try to be as democratic as possible, using
consensus to make decisions. There's lots to do at the A-Zone. You can
host an event, staff the infoshop, start your own collective, donate
stuff or money, participate in the Free Skool, or just stop by to read,
talk or hang out. To check us out and get acquainted, come to the A-Zone
General Assembly vegetarian potlucks, held every third Tuesday of the
month at 7p.

Spare some social change?

The A-Zone is supported with the help of viewers like yourself who make
the supreme sacrifice...ooops wrong flier. But really, the A-Zone is
able to
stay open and active because people like you have decided to participate
in and/or support the space. Like we said above, support means alot of
things, and money is just one of them. Many people (but never enough...)
give a monthly pledge to the A-Zone and that gives us about half of our
operating budget. The amounts range wildly but average $10-20.If this
form of support is right up your alley, call during our open hours and
leave a message for Kim. One time contributions are OK too! Thank you
for your support.

Free Skool

The Spring Semester began in March, but it's not too late to come on
by and get a schedule of classes. The Free Skool is simply a group of
people offering to share or build skills together. We use the words
skool, class, workshop, teacher and student rather loosely, meaning that
what you get out
of a class is up to you, your classmates, and the facilitator to decide.
It's been amazing to see how much fun learning is when there is no
principal to govern us, no walls in our skool, and the only limits are
the ones we
give ourselves. Bottom line -- learning and teaching are fun and
worthwhile in and of themselves.
Classes include

Drumming Circle
Tuesdays @ 9p @ Joan's, call 942-9842 for info
Bring your drum to this weekly session that features the beats of many
cultures.

Women's Art Collective
Saturdays @ Noon - 3pm Becky facilitates this women only collective
figure drawing multi-media art and discussion group. A live model is
provided,
bring a donation for the model if you can.

Other Classes include: Revolutionary Anarchism Study Group, Belly
Dancing, Hand-to-Hand Combat, Book Making, Chicago Radical History,
Cooperatives Discussion Group, Drumming, Graphic Arts Workshop, Jewelry
Making, Post-Structuralist Anarchism, Gardening, Go, and Spanish.

A-Zone Regular Events

Women's Cafe and Space
Thursdays @ 6 or 7p on alternating weeks
This is a women only space, with cafe weeks alternating with discussions
or other events. Come hang out and share your brilliance.

A-Zone Collective Meetings and General Assembly Tuesdays @ 7pm Every
Tuesday the A-Zone collective meets to organize the business of operating
the A-Zone. Everyone is welcome to attend these meetings, and if you
want to be a member of the collective/want to staff/want to hold an event
-- come and introduce yourself (we don't bite, honest, well....at least
not often). The General Assembly takes place on the third Tueday of each
month, usually its a vegetarian potluck bringing together the community
of people who make up the
A-Zone.
