Yeah, appears to be.

Keep in mind it's for the upper two tiers of service, most people with the
bundled services aren't on those.

They started rolling that out on the east coast back in january, seems to
work as advertised.

I've seen some people on the lower services also say they got a slight bump
but I think it's more imagination than reality.

As far as I know, the 50mb service which doubled to 100mb with that, is
something like $90 a month on stand-alone.

Yeah. I got an email from them saying "Your internet speed has been
increased". Instructions to reboot the modem.

Did that, didn't make any difference... Bahhhh

I didn't get any email but there are a couple things I noticed with people
saying they did and didn't see any difference after rebooting.

I really don't think the older 2.0 docsis modem/routers will work.

The other thing, if you are just on wifi, I think the max connection speed,
even with a 3.0, it's limited to 20mb for some reason. There is a way to
turn off that limiter in the admin menu, but it is on by default.

So if you are just using wifi, try using an ethernet cable and see if that
shows anything better with speedtest.net or whatever.

I can't say if there was a change or not but one machine around here I
noticed over the weekend (on hardwire) seemed to be bouncing around 25-27mb
where in the past 24mb was about the highest I've seen in the past.

Probably had more to do with the way the wind was blowing that day.

I'm on some service they don't even list anymore (like HSI) and was supposed
to be 12mb but the installer said it'll be closer to the 20-24mb range and
he was close.

The 5 Main computers are all wired (100speed). I actually get the same speeds
on the laptops and the tablet.

I've been getting 6 up and 6 down ever since they installed cable around 4
years ago.

Did you get it from them on lease? If so, yes, call and raise hell.

Find some big honkin' video on line and time how long it takes to download
then to re-upload elsewhere. Compare before and after the speed upgrade.

The same thing really, speedtest.net will give results that are close enough
for government work.

To roll your own, as Geoff brought up, you would have to download and
upload a bit and average it out. It's not really possible to come up with an
absolute value either way and speedtest is used by enough people for
a somewhat accurate reading.

I mean if you are paying for 6mb service and consistantly get readings
around 5.8mb, it's in the normal ballpark catagory. If you consistantly get
readings like 2.5mb, you probably have a problem.

As long as it comes close to getting what you are paying for, knowing the
exact value is meaningless.

Well speedtest.net isn't going to help with that unless you are paying for
6mb service. In that case you can request being reduced to 3meg service.

But if you are paying for 3 and getting 2.5mb, sucks to be you. They
consider that acceptable.

As far costs, use a dartboard, they'll charge what you'll pay.

General rule of thumb, nearly all of them have the initial 14.95 to 19.95
for the first six months or year, then back to "the normal rate", which
before you ask, doesn't exist.

At that point you can usually threaten to leave which then they'll extend
the offer or kick it up a few bucks. Then in six months or a year, wash,
rinse and repeat.

A freind of mine on the at&t dsl (not the fake uverse) is paying $24.95 for
the 3.0mb service (he can't get 6mb). This was after the 12 months of 14.95
then it jumping to $34.95. One phone call later, they cut 10 bucks off.

For reference, another friend of mine who lives probably closer to the
Wisconsin boarder than downtown (meaning no clue on the taxes), got this
quote from Comcast for internet only service, no video, no phone...

$19.99 for 6 months 3Mbps then $39.99

$29.99 for 6 months 20Mbps then $44.99

Several more faster and costly plans...

$7/mo for the modem...or you can supply your own.

No cancellation penalty after 6 months.

This was from this past january, so somewhat fresh.

The $45 for the 20mb service is somewhat of a bargain because I think that
is around what at&t charges for the 6mb dsl/fake uverse service.

barb, just so you know, what Bruce and I have called fake U-verse has
to do with AT&T refusing to provision DSL to new subscribers, except as
U-verse, in certain U-verse areas in which they haven't provisioned any
television service. That's what I've got.

It's still DSL, but it's done in a completely different way to it didn't
work with the DSL modem I'd already bought from them.

I've got the blow molded kid's swimming pool sized uverse data only modem.
It's 12Mb down (for real too) for $29.95 a month for 6 months, then it
jumps up a bit.

it's pretty solid, for a consumer type service. If I had complaints about

If you decide to go with a wireless hotspot, don't do a USB receiver.
Get one the hockey puck kind that you can move around in case you find a
dead spot with the signal.

I've had a portable hotspot from Clear for going on three years, and
have had nothing but excellent service from it/them.

If you want to dive into uncharted waters...

http://www.freedompop.com

I'm not recommending them because I don't know anyone who signed up yet but
they have one of those portable wifi boxes (mifi I guess) which you pay for
then pick one of these:

1.5mb with 1GB a month (free)
1.5mb with 10GB a month (9.99)
3.0mb with 10GB a month (14.99)
8.0mb with 10GB a month (18.99)

If you aren't streaming porn all day, the 10GB cap may not be a problem.

On the other hand, I beleive the box is refundable, I only brought it up
because although the 1GB isn't much, you could get the box, try email for a
while for free (which should fit) and see if it's any good. If not, just
quit.

I'm pretty sure Clear, Cricket and another one I can't think of all have the
portable mobile service, but you really have to examine the data rates and
volumes, some of them are really weak (small).

I came to the conclusion last time he sent me a link to there (which didn't

Is it rassist to shout nigger nigger nigger if you're on the back of the
bus, chugging grape drank and throwing hot chip bags and chicken wings
bones all over?

Can week old immigrants from Kenya shout nigger at each other?

I'm vague on the rules for this.

wow, what a bunch of pussies

"Is posting personal information ok?

NO. reddit is a pretty open and free speech place, but it is not ok to
post someone's personal information, or post links to personal
information. This includes links to public Facebook pages and screenshots
of Facebook pages with the names still legible."

a link to shitbook will get you banned?

wow

a place of free speech for sure.

Be sure to check the coverage maps for freedompop, clear and cricket,
they all use WIMAX which can be OK, but don't plan on it getting
better....it is at the end of its life, so no new towers or improvements
in service will be made. It is not available in quite a few major
cities and zero coverage in the sticks.

I recently switched from AT*T wireless (55 buck a month, no internets,
had to pay $5 200 text messages) to Virgin Mobile $38 for 300 minutes,
unlimited 4G WiMAX (slowdown to 3G after you hit 2.5G). I waited
till they got a decent 4G phone (samsung), and service is OK but
seems to have problems with 4G while moving around in a car, lots
of dropouts when moving from tower to another.

Of course, a couple of months after buying this phone, they come
out with another one that does 4Glte (Sprint, whose service virgin
resells, is curtailing WIMAX and making their own 4Glte netwok).

I can loan you a couple of different Westell or Efficent ones but
my guess your speed is restricted by the ATM sync rate, which is
dictated by the quality and length of the copper run from your
modem to the CO.

I don't know what you are currently using but it probably has
either a Texas Instruments or Broadcom chipset that are in the
two I could loan you.
