Time to drop Ameritech. I just got a letter from AT&T that I can get a
regular phone number through their cable service. I am not sure exactly how
it works, but it is supposed to be 30% cheaper. Has any one heard of this??

I ask: When was the last time you had a telephone outage?
I ask: When was the last time you had a cable outage?

If your experience is anything like mine and you value the
reliability of your phone service then the answer is obvious.
I'm sticking with Ameritech (for now).

Although Ameritech *is* Satan.

For those in the 21st Century service area for local phone service, it's
worth noting that they decided not to go with cable telephony (arguing
that the technology was far from read) and instead laid extra copper
along with their digital cable network so they could answer traditional
trunk-style POTS.

If AT&T says it is true, it must be .... NOT!

When they grab your intralata service, they often charge more for
those calls ... check the total rate package against your calling
pattern.

AT&T has NEVER, and I mean never, been able to compete in any
open marketplace. There's no reason to believe that will ever change.

The whole reason we ended up with this Green mess was so AT&T
could enter the computer marketplace, and look at what they did to
that entry several times over. Sarnoff was smart enough to get out of
that field just one time.

Now AT&T would love to recover as much of their original business
as they can, and in a competitive world they'll muck up the very business
they were once strong in.

What about it? Are you still being raped by AT&T. They can't compete
with the 5 cents a minute (and no monthly) I'm paying for LD calls. I
quit AT&T at 29 cents a minuite less than a year ago. I have no idea
what they charge now. I'll never go back

I check at least once a year. My corporate deal with MCI (spun off from
my original deal with Cellular One) still can't be beat three years later.

If you travel a lot AT&T One Rate is the best deal going.

NO ROAMING and NO LONG DISTANCE - EVER. EVEN ON ANALOG SYSTEMS.

I use it and like it. I also use their long distance on my landlines -
7c/minute any time, day, night or weekend (not time sensitive) with no
surcharge and no monthly "ding".

And speaking of long distance, does anyone know whether
AT&T will let you access other long distance companies
from their local system? Or will you be stuck with whatever
they charge for LD?

You can find several such plans by looking at
http://www.1010phonerates.com
or
http://www.abelltolls.com

You can even find a 4 cent a minute plan with no fees,
if you are willing to accept a 40 cent minimum per
completed call. The February issue of Consumer Reports
has a story on phone rates, too.

But just to get you started, GTC Telecom has 5 cents
per minute interstate, 6 cents within Illinois, no monthly
fee if you use direct billing. $1.95 if you want
to be billed on your Ameritech bill. No minimum.
See http://www.gtctelecom.com

If you want to cut your bill right away, just dial 10-10-636
before your interstate calls. The rate: 15 cents
for the first 3 minutes, 5 cents
per additional minute. (Double for calls within Illinois.)
No monthly fee or minimum.
See http://www.clearchoice.net

And if you can endure a little more hassle, bigzoo.com
offers 3.9 cents per minute anywhere within the
48 states ALL TAXES INCLUDED (inter-state and
intra-state, but AK, PR, HI are
higher). But be warned that their access number is
often busy in the evening hours -- use a phone with a redial
feature.

Just for the benefit of those still with AT&T, starting
in April, AT&T will be adding an 8.6% surcharge to
the interstate, international, and fee portions
of your bill.

It will appear in the National Access Charges portion
of your bill.

Enjoy!

You can make free long distance calls on the internet (pc to phone) to
anywhere in the U.S. Try www.dialpad.com. There are others, some use
Microsoft Netmeeting, Dialpad uses a Java app. It's not that great on a
standard 56k modem, but would probably be close to phone quality on a cable
modem or dsl line. You can use the money you save to pay for that broadband
connection.

Tell AT&T to take a hike!

I dropped the long distance carrier altogether and I use 1010-811-1+

I get snailmail from other services occasionally with similar

Check out www.essential.com and go to long distance and enter your zip code.
They show a deal with Qwest for .059/min. no monthly fee. Also some other
offers there.

With no presubscribed long distance carrier you should have no problem
reaching 800/888/877/etc numbers ... which thus allows you to use
Bigzoo.com at 3.9 cents per minute, inclusive of all taxes ... nothing
appears on your phone bill but you can check your calling history on
line. You do have to prebuy time with your credit card but unless you
are a very heavy user, $5 is enough for over 2 hours of US calling.

Only problem with them is that during peak hours at night it can be
very difficult to get into their numbers ... during the daytime they
work just fine.

Of course if network congestion is not too bad you can use dialpad.com
for free US calls .. at times this feels more like a ship-to-shore
radio than a phone but free is free :-)

Check out 10-15-335. The same deal as 10-10-811, except the rate is only 4
cents per minute, there is no Universal Service fee, and the rates to Canada
are higher. Both have a 10 minute minimum.
