I was perplexed by the numbers in the article about Sam Hurd in the
Chicago Tribune. According to the Trib, Sam Hurd wanted to move 1000
pounds of pot in Chicago per week. Using my degenerate pothead friend
as a baseline who seems to be stoned a lot, she goes through 1/4 ounce
per month. If she's a typical degenerate pothead and represents an
average user, then Hurd's distribution network would need:

4000 lbs/month * ~50 users/ounce * 16 ounces/lb = 320,000 average users.

Assuming 10% of the population are average users then 320,000 represents
just about the entire Chicago population for pot. How did Sam Hurd
think he was going to do this? It doesn't make sense. According to my
degenerate pothead friend, she said that at $450/pound it's probably
pretty shitty pot that no one in their right mind would waste a lung to
smoke or cook with anyway. I wouldn't know however, I stick to legal
booze.

From: http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/football/bears/chi-report-
bears-receiver-hurd-arrested-on-drug-charges-20111215,0,461077.story

At the Wednesday night meeting, Hurd negotiated to buy five to 10
kilograms of cocaine and 1,000 pounds of marijuana a week for
distribution in the Chicago area, authorities alleged. He agreed to pay
$25,000 for each kilogram of cocaine and $450 a pound for the marijuana,
according to the charges.

Oops. Bad math. its ~50 users/pound or 200K average users. I
shouldn't be drinking beer and doing math in my head at the same time.

My guess is, it's $450 a pound if you are buying 1000 pounds a week.

It's probably the same stuff that sells for $1000-$1200 a pound on the
street. It does seem like it's still low end, appears "the good stuff" is
around $3K a pound depending which stoner website you want to beleive.

I think though, if you want to beleive the quantities (remember those
numbers are from the feds), he must of already had a distro network in
place. Since this thing started last year with one of his cars having 90K in
cash and a bunch of pot in it, he must of had shop set up in Texas already.

One or two contacts with gang members, the quantity might be on track for
major players.

I'm just saying if the numbers are accurate, was probably intended for a
multiple city distribution, not just Chicago.

I dunno anything about the guy or the drug biz, except what I just googled
but when I first heard this story, my gut reaction was he must of thought he
was untouchable. Maybe he figured since he was a NFL player, no one would
believe a rumor he was also a major drug distributor, if rumors started to
leak out.

WTF are you talking about???

A typ user will smoke about 1~2 oz month of shitty mexican. That means
8~20 customers/pound

The more potheads buy in volume, the more they smoke.

So i'm seeing 8,000~20,000 customers/month. The Chicagoland market,
call it the WXRT listening area, can easily absorb that kind of supply.

The numbers make the entire thing sound fishy. That I.C.E agents were
involved, the same outfit shutting down web sites, also makes this case
suspicious. Hurd is out on bond so if he's a major playa like those
numbers suggest, the government would have asked for more than $100K
bond. The news suggested there was a list of NFL players involved which
also doesn't make sense. I wouldn't think a major dealer would deal in
small amounts for personal use. Although the facts of this case aren't
out, with ICE involved I tend to think the corruption probably lies with
ICE -- especially the way they're doing mission creep getting into all
kinds of things like policing the Internet that they shouldn't be doing.

Meanwhile the Bears are out a backup receiver and a decent special teams
guy.

Doubtful, so a ring of second stringers could move dope nation wide
without any hassles. IIRC the Bears charters stop in some corner of
ORD. Hurd's dope was meant for the Benz crowd, not a toker in back of
the 152 bus.

At $450/pound that's not dope meant for the Benz crowd, that's dope
meant for the kenji crowd.

I watched the whole Miami Vice series this spring. I'm an expert in
this stuff.

I also _had_ a *passing* acquaintance with people who did this shit for
real, back in the 90s.

I realized my numbers are off by 4x. I didn't realize he wanted to
swing 1000# of pot/week. I though it was a monthly thing.

Even at 1000/week, its a lot and people would notice. At 4000/month...
wow. That's impacting someone else's livelihood; it's taking food from
someone's children so to speak.

We aren't even touching on the Peruvian marching powder, of which
several keys/week were mentioned, i think.

He either bullshitted himself into a lot of trouble or he's seriously
connected. Thing is, a car belonging to him got tagged with $80 large
down in dallas. That hints at seriously connected.

If he's able to move that kind of volume, there's no way he's in charge;
I can't see a NFL player having the kind of time needed to run or
oversee something like that. Unless of course he's some kind of
Superdealer.

So he's a purchasing agent. For some very bad dudes.

Did he bond out? If so, anyone want to take odds on how long he
continues to breath w/o a respirator?

Paging Ron T. to the thread.

It's all government/cop drug math at this point. Don't expect to make
sense of any of it.

Since he supposedly got nailed by undercovers could it be a John

I had a fun conversation about this nitwit tonight. Suffice to say that
either the papers are ridiculously off on their numbers, or he was
actually feeding 2-3 teams and hangers on' worth of habit. Going to be
fun to watch it play out either way.

Early word is that he was already selling a fucking assload of blow
around Chicago. 2-3K, which is two-three times what your average "car
Mexican" is selling a week. Since I can't imagine any NFL player has the
time to hustle grams that hard, I'm guessing he was pulling that off by
selling ridiculously large piles of blow in large chunks a few times a
week. Which, if any average Thursday night in River North holds true, is
about right.

By using a 2oz/month average use as opposed to my assumption of a 1/4 oz
average use means you're estimation is almost an order of magnitude
below mine. Since my calculation on 1000lb/week with 10% of the
population average potheads resulted in 100% market coverage for Chicago
proper and perhaps 50% coverage for the greater Chicagoland area. Since
your assumptions are an order of magnitude lower then he would still
need to get 5-10% market share in a fairly large area with a ~7.5M
population. This still seems insurmountable.

Since I get all my information about the drug trade from the TV show
"The Wire," having someone making real legitimate money get involved
with something like this usually ended up with the guy making the
legitimate money getting conned out of it by either law enforcement or
the bad guys.

If I was going to take a charter flight out of O'Hare, where would I

take a bus from the puddle jumper gate? Or are all charter passengers
blindfolded and sent in a windowless van to the charter plane hangar?

By the comments in that forum, the TSA does some wanding before the
bus is loaded. Not clear on baggage but could be like Air Force One,
i.e. nothing.

No wonder the NFL put a franchise in Jacksonville,FL. An easy unload
for the go-fast boats on the coast and a taste for the pros to spread
via "team flights". Think of the tonnage the Dolphins have moved over

This shouldn't be a surprise:

" Hurd was apparently not armed outside Morton's Steakhouse when
federal agents took him into custody last Wednesday.
However, according to federal court records, at some point after that,
U.S. Immigration and Customs officers determined Hurd had numerous
guns at the Lake Forest home where he was living with his wife and
daughter.

An AR-15 was among the firearms that Hurd had to surrender as a
requirement of his bond. The semi-automatic assault rifle owned by
Hurd is the civilian version of the full-auto, military issue M-16.
Bond records obtained Tuesday by the I-Team state that "defendant
[Hurd] shall turn over AR-15 rifle and all shotguns in his possession
to agents with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security within 24
hours of defendant's release."

Its a "pension plan" for the second striggers who typically last 4 or
5 seasons. Jacksonville deserves a team as much as Naperville/Aurora
does.

I think it falls under the umbrella of "Homeland Security".

We were trying to figure that out last year when customs started to seize
domain names of websites that were not even hosted in the united states.

The websites made the mistake of using a u.s. registration service (godaddy,
versign/netsol) but some of the websites didn't have a damn thing to do with
customs and what they are supposed to do.

The ones selling counterfeit goods (purses, shoes, nfl stuff), maybe.

But most of them were like movie and video sites.

I guess it's like getting dog shit off your shoes without a stick, you keep
spreading it around on the grass.
