Does anybody remember the Oak Lawn gun shop around 95th and Southwest
HIghway from back in the Sixties and early Seventies? IIRC they added
a ski shop or somesuch building while the gun shop was there. They
had all kinds of firearms on the main floor, a whole bunch of stuffed
animals in the windows, and gun ranges downstairs.

I had an older friend who used to take me shooting at this place, when
I was around five or six until maybe ten years old, so that would be
around '69-'72. I remember there were at least two underground gun
ranges, one being mainly for pistols, and the other for high-powered
rifles. We used to take the bus there from the Ashburn neighborhood
(St. Denis parish) with my friend's rifles (in cases, but can you
imagine trying to pull that today?!)

This friend told me, at the time, that the rifle range might have been
one of the longest indoor ranges in the country, but I have no idea
whether this would be even close to the truth. At the age I was, I
just took it as gospel.

I seem to remember the pistol range being 25 yards and the rifle range
being 175 yards (75 yards would seem more reasonable, looking back,
but 175 is what my child's memory says--maybe I remember 175 feet?),
but again, I cannot distinctly recall.

Boy did I have fun at that place. I think I am lucky to have been
introduced to sporting firearms and especially firearm safety at such
a young age. Anyway, I know the site closed as a gun shop long ago,
but was wondering what became of the underground parts? Are they
still part of some other structure there, or used as storage in the
same buildings, or did they fill them in and build houses there? I
now live in Cicero, but very seldom have a reason to go around that
area, but I figure there would be someone in this forum who would know
something about this place.

I was just curious if anyone here has any memories of this place. I
am relatively new to this group, so forgive any transgressions of
etiquette, and forgive the googleposting but I do not use usenet
enough to warrant a newsfeed subscription.

Cheers!

Don't worry, someone around there speaks Spanish.

I knew it was there but I never went in. Do you remember Dot 'n' Ed's
Homestead Bar, which was nearby?

There was another gun shop south on Cicero in Oak Lawn that was
originally a Der Wienerschnitzel. When no one on the Southwest side.
wanted to eat LA-style hot dogs, the A-frame stand became a gun store,
with a more conventionally shaped addition.

Long time between posts, but here it goes.
I remember the underground range. It must have gone under SW highway, it was a good size range!!! It had a mechanical .22 shooting gallery with the moving targets and ducks! I and a friend used the rifle range but don't remember how long it was. Often wondered if it all still there? Crook County ran all the gun shops out and now peoplw are still getting shot in Chicago all the time!!!

Bass Pro Shops may all have indoor ranges (The original in Springfield, MO had
one for sure, and the others may as well - I'd phone first). They are probably
a more entertaining place to take the family to as well.

Wow, I'm late to the party but was talking to my daughter last night about OLGS. She lives in oak lawn and was visiting out here in AZ.

I shot there often. Bought one of my first rifles there and my first High end 1911, a Colt National Match Gold Cup. They had a 100yd underground shooting range. I shot there and Chicago Ridge indoor ranges often.
