I need to go apply for my Illinois DL, I like my Michigan one, really,
but I would like a piece of picture ID with my current addresson it so
I can stop carrying around a copy of my lease as proof of residency.
:)

Where do I need to go, and where is it?? I *think* it is like, Clark
and Lake?? I would rather make sure then wander the loop. :)

email or post here is fine, I read both.

thanks in advance.

Actually, there's one right across from the Thompson Building
at Clark on Randolph, in a storefront about two doors east of Clark.
It's often much less busy than the office within the Thompson.

You need to go to your phone book. It's probably near your telephone.
I *think* it is like a big book with paper pages. They may very well
have them in the vacinity of Clark and Lake, though you might be able
to find one closer to home. If you do try wandering around the loop,
you will probably find one fairly easily, as they are quite common.

Don't hesitate to ask thousands of people in chi.general for help in
actually *using* the phone book. I'm sure that we are all frightfully
interested in the subject.

Be advised, though, that actually getting a drivers license in this
state does require a modicum of intelligence. There are actual tests
involved. Good luck!

Ah, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha! Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha,
ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha! Thanks for the laugh.

In actuality, it requires:
* your physical presence at a Sec'y of State facility
* eight dollars U.S.
* the ability to make your mark on the application

Gee, where I used to live (WI), we had to go to the Department of
Motor Vehicles (or was it the DOT? I can't remember any longer) to
get a driver's license renewed. Imagine my confusion here when I
couldn't find any DMV listed, when my thick phone book from good ol'
Ameritech didn't have government pages, and when I was finally told by
someone that the _Secretary of State_ was the place to go here.

To the original poster: you'll need $10, your old DL, your Social
Security card, and something with your current address like a recent
bill or your checks. Be prepared to take an eye test and the written
test. Driver's License Facilities are located all over the place, but
I gave away my "Rules of the Road" book, so I don't have a list any
more.

Thanks for being SO helpful to this guy who moved from out-of-state
and might well be in a similar situation. (I guess that thread maybe
two years ago about which drivers license facilities were recommended
was OK since the questioner was a resident.)
