You don't have to go there every year. You can do it by mail, or (for
an extra fee) in person at a currency exchange.

If the address to which it's registered is in the city, you'll also
need a city sticker.

Hello there,

This will be the first time I am getting a car in CHicago. I am
buying a new car. In fact, it's my first time owning a car in this
country, so I don't know about the legal process and such. I have a few

questions to ask about this subject.

To own a car, I need to have a license which I already have.
Then I have to get the auto-insurance. Besides that, I got to go to the
state-legislature or whatever that place is to register and pay tax for
my car every year to get the sticker to put on my license plate. DO I
get it right? If I am misssing anything, please advise me. I really

need to know this very soon.

Thank you,

Jae

The two times I've had to do this, the currency exchange people were very
good about telling me all the stuff I needed, but they charge a couple
bucks extra for one of the things. Their convenience and level of service
compared to government employees is worth two bucks, IMHO.

[Disclaimer: maybe I went to the only good currency exchange in the city.]

You can also renew your license plates by phone with a credit card these
days... but there's a charge for it.

well, if you buy a car from a dealership they charge you $40 and take
care of all the paperwork for you. the $40 "document fee" is a total
rip off since it only costs about $13 for the paperwork. however, if
you're buying the car from a guy [non dealer] then you have to get
the seller to give you an invoice with the selling price, date of
sale, vin, and other details about the car. this document should be
signed and dated by both you and the seller. when you go to the
secretary of state office to register your car they will ask to see
this document to verify the sale price and to assess a sales tax.
they will also have some other forms for you to fill out as well
but they can explain that part at the office. if you are paying
the full purchase price for the car yourself, in cash, MAKE SURE YOU
GET THE SELLER TO SIGN OVER THE TITLE TO YOU. also make sure that
the title is clear of liens because if it isn't you're going to end
up stuck with any debts that the seller accumulated where the vehicle
was used as collateral [or risk getting a visit from the repo man in
the middle of the night]. of course, if the seller actually has the
title in hand then it's probably clear.

after you get done with the secretary of state's office you should,
if everything is in order, walk out with registration and plates. if
title is to be reassigned to you it will be about 6 weeks or less
before you are sent a new title by mail. check it to make sure there
are no errors.

if you live in some cities [such as chicago and surrounding towns in
the suburbs] you'll have to check with city hall to get a vehicle
sticker for your city.

to get insurance all you have to do is go to some agent, you may want
to call around for rates and pick the agent giving you the best rate.
if you've got the paperwork to hack the secretary of state office
requirements, you should have enough to get the car insured.

Well, if you live in my neighborhood, Lakeview, either pay for a parking spot
or sell the car as you will otherwise, spend a large portion of your
life, searching for a parking space :-)
