I have for sale a $50 Civil War note from the State of
Louisiana, the vignette in the lower right is a woman sitting
down holding a staff in one hand, there is a large L in a
fancy design to the middle left and a 50 in a circle in the
upper right. The wording on the note says "Twelve months after
a definitive treaty of peace between the Confederate States of
America and the United States the State of Louisiana will pay
fifty dollars to the bearer at the treasurers office
Shreveport, March 10, 1863". The central vignette is a
portrait of General Leonadis Polk known as "the fighting bishop
of the Confederacy". Polk was born in 1809 and graduated from
West Point Military Academy, he resigned from the military
shortly thereafter and decided to become an Episcopal minister.
By the 1840's Polk was the Episcopal Bishop of Louisiana. When
the Civil War started Jefferson Davis, president of the
Confederacy and an old classmate at West Point asked Polk to
serve in the Confederate military, he accepted and became a
General, commanding troops in a number of battles. Polk was
killed by a Union artillery shell in a battle near Pine
Mountain, Georgia in 1864. The note is printed in black and
white, signed and numbered, with a fancy green design on the
back. There is some bleed through on the back from the ink
signatures on the front, this is common for notes of this era.
The note is uncirculated. This is a popular note that keeps
going up in price in the dealer catalogs and price lists that
I receive. My price on this note is $49. postpaid. If
interested just send me an e-mail. Satisfaction or money back.
