Thought I'd report on this for the hell of it, maybe check yer yard.

It appears the tulips are starting to come up.

Not just breaking ground, one of them is around 2" already.

Can't really think of anything to do about it but the odds of them surviving
from this point to bloom has to be next to nil.

hmmmm.

Those things are incredibly frost hardy. Long as we don't drop below,
i dunno, 25F maybe lower, they'll shake it off.

Last year, I had them on Feb. 1. However, there was no frost in the
ground at the time. This year there is. That is what surprises me.
How the heck did they start growing if the ground is frozen. Perhaps
next to a laundry or water heater vent? Maybe covered up with some
leaves or brush that insulated the ground?

I've got some kind of irises greening up in the yard. Also, my neighbor is
fostering a young elkhound mix that my dogs like to run up and down the
fence line with, so whatever may grow there is gonna be trashed. I like the
dog tho.

Anyone want a 6-7 month old male shepard/elkhound mix? He's a sweet dog,
housebroken, just needs some obedience training.

has it been colder out by you? I don't think the ground is frozen by me.

I don't think that much different, though we did get quite a bit more
snow. I'd be surprised if you don't have at least a 6" to a foot of
frost with the temps getting into the twenties most nights. I was
talking to a friend who still has a place out by the cottage Lou used to
have, and he went ice fishing yesterday. Said there was 7"-8" ice in
most places on the lake.

I went and checked the ground, and you're absolutely right. There is
1/2" or so frozen on the top in the AM, and that's about it. Didn't
take long getting away from working dirt to totally ignore those things.

It's them, the tulips, it's the only thing that grows on that area besides a
few weeds.

No, it's by the garage, there isn't any heat source there and very limited
sunshine this time of year.

I dunno where you live but here in the city, nothing is frozen.

I think we only had 2 or 3 days where the high temp failed to go above
freezing. We had a few spot patches of ice from the .000023 inches of snow
before christmas but was only on the grass.

Still pretty fucking weird to me.

Yeah but only if we were towards the end of winter around here, is why I
titled the subject "this is the 1st week of january, right?".

I think the coldest days we ever had were in January, but the normal cold
streaks where it's single digits for highs day-after-day are usually in the
beginning of February.

I mean trying the plastic to overcome a few days of below freezing temps is
one thing, trying to ride out the rest of the winter I just don't see it
working.

I'll give it the old college try but if these bloom into anything at all,
it'll be surprising.

As long as the bloom hasn't sprouted its no big thing. Rabbit snacking
is the biggest threat.

Squirrels and rabbits eat tulips. I see plenty of those critters in my
neighborhood. I know they are delicious but i haven't been out hunting
in ages. So a pretty weak linkage for direct on topic content. But it
is the only group in the chi.* hierarchy that I subscribe to so whatever.

I don't think anyone reads chi.gardens because of all the crossposted porn
in there these days.

Besides, I'm sure tulips is a delicacy in some 3rd world country that could
be just getting net access now.

Welcome poor people!!!
