Any remaining German restaurants besides Berghof?

With the closing of Zum Deutschen Eck, I now know of only one German restaurant
in the city -- Berghof. While I certainly enjoy it, we like to try other
places. We go as far as Milwaukee (Mader's) sometimes but does anyone know
another good German restaurant in Chicago?

Thanks.

Wow, I've got to get out more. I had to call the Eck to verify that they
are indeed closed, which is a real shame. They served some of the best
hackepeter (sp?) around. I miss it and them already. To your point - I
don't place it in the same league as ZDE or Mader's but the Chicago Brauhaus
in Lincoln Square is still open. It's considerably more casual than the
others but I've always found the food good and the prices quite reasonable.
It's also about the only place I know that has Spaten Optimator (though I
haven't stopped in to the Great Beer Palace). chicagobrauhaus.com closed
on Tuesdays
No more ZDE, bummer. I think I still have one of those goofy green felt
hats from them around somewhere.

Yeah, they're dropping fast. Very sad.

Don't forget Mirabell on Addison (still around, isn't it?) and Resi's on
Irving. Also Lutz serves a limited menu of German-Austrian food. Dessert
is clearly the main event however.

I've never been to Mirabell. Any comments about it?

The food at Mirabell is very good. I had a bad, service-related, experience
there quite a while ago and maybe some year I'll give them another chance -
but I do have quite a few friends that still make it a destination
restaurant for German food. On the topic of closed German restaurants
didn't the German-American close not too long ago? And of course the
Heidleberger-Fass on Lincoln - my wife and I really miss that one.

My dad used to cook for both places back in the late 70's & early 80's
before he retired. He also used to cook for Bergmann's on Lincoln up in
Lincolnwood up until the owner retired in the late 70's. "What?? A Japanese
cook making German food?", said the surprised Sun-Times food critic when he
saw my dad cooking for Bergmann's. They got 3 stars (out of 4) in that
review.

German-American has been closed for at least 3 yrs.

Looks like there will be a dearth of German restaurants in the coming years,
since most of the people are retiring & there is no one to take over for
them. I've been going to the Bohemian restaurants since they've closed.

I really miss the spaetzel, wiener schnitzel, and roast duckling that those
restaurants used to serve. Mader's (in Milwaukee) is good, but too far for a
week night for dinner.

I've also never been to Mirabell or Resi's. Can anyone comment on those two?

Don't know about the city but there are a number of German places out
in the suburbs that are closer than Mader's.

Kuhn's Deli has two places open for lunch. First one is at the corner
of York and Golf, the other on the corner of Waukegan and Lake-Cook.

Then there's Schnitzel Platz on North Ave. just west of 355.

Also, Hans' Bavarian House on Milwaukee just west of Lake-Cook.

Finally, don't know the name, but there is a German restaurant in
Glen Ellyn on Roosevelt Road just east of Lambert.

Kuhn's is the only one that I would recommend. The others I found
so-so.

Han's Bavarian closed last week...the owner wanted to retire and sell, but
couldn't find a buyer. What a shame.

You mean Elmhurst Road; it's in Des Plaines. The other is in Deerfield.
That's an excellent recommendation. But it's an even better place to shop:
They must have 20 kinds of ham and 30 kinds of sausage for sale!

Unfortunately, their original place in Lake View on Lincoln near Belmont
has been closed for years. Feh.

I haven't been there in two years, but the Black Forest Chalet was always very
good. It's on Waukegan Road 1 block north of Dempster. MMMM...liver dumpling soup!
Speaking of German favorites long gone, remember the Salzburger Hof on Lincoln?
Schwaben Stube on Lincoln?

I highly recommend Chef Paul, and can report that in fifteen years of going
there, I have never once been lectured about whether the red cabbage (which
I *always* order) goes with my entree or not. I also prefer the warm potato
salad with just about everything on the menu and have yet to be reprimanded
for that either. The liver dumpling soup is excellent and among the entrees
my favorites are the Tyroler hackschnitzel, rouladen, szegedin(sp?) goulash,
and the knackwurst platter for lunch. Nice beer list as well.

Used to be Four Flags or some such - back when the subtitle was Bavarian -
German - American - Mexican Cusisine. (really, I'm not making this up,
though I'm not quite certain of the "Bavarian") Cally and I rather like
their Schnitzel Diane, with much garlic butter and mushrooms, but it never
struck me as being authentically German. Then again, for all that I had an
authentically ethnic German grandmother, it didn't have a lot of effect on
the food we ate when I was growing up. Except for the Leikuken (sp?), still
a family standard, and the breaded pork chops fried in much butter...

There's a place on Ogden, a bit west of 53 with the odd name of Chef Paul's,
I think, that friends tell us is quite a good German restaurant. One Of
These Days we have to give it a try, despite having heard that the
waitresses are all stern Teutonic ladies with definite opinions about what
sides ought to accompany which entrees. This is likely to get me in
trouble, because I never have cottoned to sauerkraut. :-( :-)

A Chicago tradition is the Golden Ox at 1578 N Clybourn Ave (at North Ave)
in Chicago (312 944-0284). Last time I was there, it was tough to find
parking, but I think the food is as good as you can get in Chicago. There's
another place called the Chicago Brauhaus at 4732 N Lincoln Ave in Chicago
(Lincoln Square near Lawrence and Western Avenues) (773) 784-4444). It's a
very quaint, but large, place with live German music; definitely worth a
visit.

Golden Ox has a sign in the window that says "Closed for remodeling", but
there was an article in last Sunday's Tribune that said the owners sold the
building already to developers & had no intent of re-opening.

And I agree, they did have good food there.

It's not in Chicago, but there's one I've always liked out here in
the Fox Valley. It's the Gasthaus Zur Linde, in downtown Elgin. East
side of the river, in the old downtown. Yummy yummy. Wish I could give
you better directions -- call 'em. I stop in for a "snack" when I'm
riding the river trail.

In the western suburbs, I would NOT recommend Schnitzel Platz or Bavarian
Inn. They are pretty much just o.k. We used to go to Chef Paul in it's
old location. The food seemed to go downhill when it moved to it's current
Ogden location.

However, I would strongly recommend the Heidelberger International Deli and
Restaurant in Elmhurst. It is located on York just south of the train
tracks. The upstairs is a deli/shop and the Rathskeller restauarant is
in the basement (as it should be). They servce lunch weekdays. Dinner
is served Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. (Yes, German traditions
still exist!) It's small and cozy and usually there's an accordian player
on the weekend. The food is great if you like traditional German favorites.

There is a tiny Austrian restaurant just north of the late ZDE.
Metro Club Austrian Restaurant
3032 N Lincoln
773 929-0622

The interior is rusty and cozy. Never tried the food; maybe someone
else can report, or at least confirm they're still open.

It's kind of a cruise from downtown, but there is a really good German
place in Lake Zurich named Fritzl's. It's on Rt12 (Rand Rd) just north of
Rt 22.

There's a place called Kristl's (close enough) in downtown Palatine near
the RR tracks.

Lake County has taken a hit with the loss of Ann's Bavaria House and now
Han's Bavarian.

Was there a week or so ago. Sampled the beef tongue over creamed spinach,
it was superb. My pork shank was very tender and comparable to the stuff I
had last summer in Cologne, that is very very good. Thuringer appetizer
was well worth the $4.95 cost, and their Sauerkraut was the best
I've had in the US (but the stuff I had in Germany was exquisite).

Prices for entrees ranged from 10-15$ for the basic stuff...came with
very very good goulash. Also sampled spatzels, decent taste/texture,
BitBurger beer on tap was fresh/good.

Now the bad stuff. The wait to order was 20 minutes, the wait to get
the soup was 20 more, and 30 min wait for the entrees. They have
no parking, and the closest residential street is "residents only".
You can chance it at the "all others towed" Kmart parking lot
across the street, good luck.

That said, definately going back to sample more stuff!
