Thanks.
Yeah, they're dropping fast. Very sad.
Don't forget Mirabell on Addison (still around, isn't it?) and Resi's on
Irving. Also Lutz serves a limited menu of German-Austrian food. Dessert
is clearly the main event however.
I've never been to Mirabell. Any comments about it?

Before you buy.
The food at Mirabell is very good. I had a bad, service-related, experience
there quite a while ago and maybe some year I'll give them another chance -
but I do have quite a few friends that still make it a destination
restaurant for German food. On the topic of closed German restaurants
didn't the German-American close not too long ago? And of course the
Heidleberger-Fass on Lincoln - my wife and I really miss that one.
German-American has been closed for at least 3 yrs.
Looks like there will be a dearth of German restaurants in the coming years,
since most of the people are retiring & there is no one to take over for
them. I've been going to the Bohemian restaurants since they've closed.
I really miss the spaetzel, wiener schnitzel, and roast duckling that those
restaurants used to serve. Mader's (in Milwaukee) is good, but too far for a
week night for dinner.
I've also never been to Mirabell or Resi's. Can anyone comment on those two?

Kuhn's Deli has two places open for lunch. First one is at the corner
of York and Golf, the other on the corner of Waukegan and Lake-Cook.
Then there's Schnitzel Platz on North Ave. just west of 355.
Also, Hans' Bavarian House on Milwaukee just west of Lake-Cook.
Finally, don't know the name, but there is a German restaurant in
Glen Ellyn on Roosevelt Road just east of Lambert.
Kuhn's is the only one that I would recommend. The others I found
so-so.

You mean Elmhurst Road; it's in Des Plaines. The other is in Deerfield.
That's an excellent recommendation. But it's an even better place to shop:
They must have 20 kinds of ham and 30 kinds of sausage for sale!
Unfortunately, their original place in Lake View on Lincoln near Belmont
has been closed for years. Feh.

I highly recommend Chef Paul, and can report that in fifteen years of going
there, I have never once been lectured about whether the red cabbage (which
I *always* order) goes with my entree or not. I also prefer the warm potato
salad with just about everything on the menu and have yet to be reprimanded
for that either. The liver dumpling soup is excellent and among the entrees
my favorites are the Tyroler hackschnitzel, rouladen, szegedin(sp?) goulash,
and the knackwurst platter for lunch. Nice beer list as well.

Used to be Four Flags or some such - back when the subtitle was Bavarian -
German - American - Mexican Cusisine. (really, I'm not making this up,
though I'm not quite certain of the "Bavarian") Cally and I rather like
their Schnitzel Diane, with much garlic butter and mushrooms, but it never
struck me as being authentically German. Then again, for all that I had an
authentically ethnic German grandmother, it didn't have a lot of effect on
the food we ate when I was growing up. Except for the Leikuken (sp?), still
a family standard, and the breaded pork chops fried in much butter...

I think, that friends tell us is quite a good German restaurant. One Of
These Days we have to give it a try, despite having heard that the
waitresses are all stern Teutonic ladies with definite opinions about what
sides ought to accompany which entrees. This is likely to get me in
trouble, because I never have cottoned to sauerkraut. :-( :-)

NT scales to quad Xeons? Linux scales to S/390. Benchmark that, soft ones.
And I agree, they did have good food there.

However, I would strongly recommend the Heidelberger International Deli and
Restaurant in Elmhurst. It is located on York just south of the train
tracks. The upstairs is a deli/shop and the Rathskeller restauarant is
in the basement (as it should be). They servce lunch weekdays. Dinner
is served Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. (Yes, German traditions
still exist!) It's small and cozy and usually there's an accordian player
on the weekend. The food is great if you like traditional German favorites.
The interior is rusty and cozy. Never tried the food; maybe someone
else can report, or at least confirm they're still open.

I work in Lisle and have had lunch there several times. It's quite good.
You can seriously raise your cholesterol levels there.
There's a place called Kristl's (close enough) in downtown Palatine near
the RR tracks.
Lake County has taken a hit with the loss of Ann's Bavaria House and now
Han's Bavarian.

Was there a week or so ago. Sampled the beef tongue over creamed spinach,
it was superb. My pork shank was very tender and comparable to the stuff I
had last summer in Cologne, that is very very good. Thuringer appetizer
was well worth the $4.95 cost, and their Sauerkraut was the best
I've had in the US (but the stuff I had in Germany was exquisite).
Prices for entrees ranged from 10-15$ for the basic stuff...came with
very very good goulash. Also sampled spatzels, decent taste/texture,
BitBurger beer on tap was fresh/good.
Now the bad stuff. The wait to order was 20 minutes, the wait to get
the soup was 20 more, and 30 min wait for the entrees. They have
no parking, and the closest residential street is "residents only".
You can chance it at the "all others towed" Kmart parking lot
across the street, good luck.
That said, definately going back to sample more stuff!
