Well-Known Bakery Shut Down With Six Violations

Jon Duncanson
Reporting

(CBS) CHICAGO Each week we bring you a different restaurant or bakery where
the health department has found violations and has warned us that we eat at
our own risk.

Now CBS 2's Jon Duncanson goes along with inspectors to a place that
qualifies as one of the dirtiest yet.

It's another day on the Eat At Your Own Risk beat. This time at the Baltic
Bakery in Back of the Yards at 4627 S. Hermitage Street.

"It's bad. What I am thinking of is about the public. They're thinking
they're getting wholesome food and in reality they're not," said sanitarian
Arleen Lopez.

One hour earlier inside the bakery's storefront deli operation, the meat is
too warm, the milk is past dated and warm too.

"Temperature should be 40 or below and look at what I got. 47. No good,"
Lopez said.

The eggs were no good either. That means critical violation number one.

And the refrigeration is reaching 49.4. That's critical violation number
two.

Then there's no hot water -- enough by itself to shut down operations.

But sanitarians Lopez and Virginia Castaneda go on into a labyrinthine
building more than a century old into the bakery area where the company
bakes bread products to sell to area stores and restaurants.

This is like an old, cold basement warehouse. You look around and you find
out in the middle of nowhere, stuff like this. In fact, there's bread
standing out everywhere, even down on the floor.

Mouse droppings are in the corner with the bread, along with roaches and
more mouse dropping throughout. Another critical violation.

The hand-washing sink is clogged. The pipes are leaking. Another critical
violation.

"It might take days to clean this place," Castaneda said.

The owner shows up and says, "Could you turn off the camera please?"

We shut down our cameras at that point inside the Baltic Bakery, but
afterwards inspectors found a lot more -- more roaches, standing water and
clutter.

In all, six critical violations and the big green "license suspended" sign,
a reminder you always eat at your own risk.

The Baltic Bakery remains closed, although it's bread may still be in
Chicago area grocery stores.

On Thursday, it also received a violation from the Chicago Fire Department
for using a propane tank for heating.
