Hi.

I think it'd be cool to create an online coloring book utilizing
HTML5's canvas/drawing features.

Anyone who can add to this concept,
feel free to jump in.

Wouldn't an online coloring book be a bit cumbersome? I mean think of
the limits of coloring with a mouse, and using paint would take less
effort.

By the way what do you mean by 'create'?

I think it would be awesome. Given HTML5s capabilities. It would be good to step outside of the "paint" box..

With paint you can't have two people painting at the same time ... one
in Chicago and one in Hong Kong :-) Also, a mouse is not the only
thing one can use as an input device nowadays ...

I also think this would be awesome and great for kids using
touchscreen devices.

Would it be like making a better paint, one that worked in a more user friendly fashion. If it's online there could even be a gallery of other users work and maybe a user submission form. But why do want an online coloring book?

Now you're thinking.
It'd be great if users could upload their own background images.

Either stuff that they find on Google Images or their own photos.

I can vouch for that - my kids' regularly ask me "Can I play Doodle Buddy on your iPod?"  An HTML5 version of DoodleBuddy would be a nice intro project with room for growth.

That is true, it would be really cool if it had a collaborative feature for kids to share drawing or work on a large drawing together.

You do have a point. Doing nothing is a pain. That sort of thing could
be interesting as a starters project. It might even have some
popularity if it were to ally with DeviantArt and their army of
artist. There are often those who can draw but can't color and put up
their lined worked for others to finish. So an online coloring book
could in fact be a powerful tool. But how will it be designed? On
entrance would it be split into many sections or bring up one random
pic for others to draw?

I think it could have categories to choose what part of a picture or drawing the user would like to participate on. And each section would pertain to only that work. and the ability to combine each category into one single completed picture.

it could just give them a section to work on.

Why not do both? This is a learning experience, why don't we learn to
randomize things and put in all the options that people would normally
use. We would have to know the diff. sections of art work that artist
use like shading, lighting, etc., but all that can be found using
wiki.

Well, I know My homie John is in on this, and Raphael sounds in.

You other dudes are of course welcome.

I suppose that we should break the job into smaller parts.

Each to his (or her) own skill.

Some ideas include:

1. Thinking of a name.
2. Designing a logo.
3. Creating an interactive canvas
4. Creating a means of uploading images to the canvas.
5.  Creating different methods or functions to interact with the canvas.
6.  Creating a way to save/share products.
7.  Designing the web site.
8.  Establishing a user log in system.
9. Creating a means to comment on other's work.
10. Creating a method of buddy coloring.

Many of these tasks are optional, but this should give us some semblance of direction.

Sounds like a plan to me! I would prefer sketching the UI and functional logic first, maybe some pseudo code before  starting the development process. Which would mean we would need a place to meet.

How difficult or easy would it be for you guys to get downtown?

Wow - there are some pretty cool demos in here. Here's the tangent I'm playing around with this afternoon until we meet:

I'm adding a feature so that you can use your camera or gallery to set one of your own photos as the backdrop, then draw on that (kind of like you see in football games on TV)

This is all being implemented with local storage, but if we allowed sharing via the site, then tagged with geolocation and displayed on a google map...
