This is one that I suggested for the NYC hackathon as well:

I've always been a huge Tetris fan. I remember playing it on PC,
Gameboy, Snes, TI-83(probably should have paid more attention in
class), cellphones, etc etc.. Tetris is conceptually simple,
graphically simple and fun to play. Because of this, I think it
makes
a great starter project to hack on.

You could become familiar with a few APIs: canvas, web audio. If you
want to get really advanced(and if you have a big enough team) you
could build a web socket based Tetrinet. Tetrinet is a multiplayer
version of Tetris where you can also earn specials to disrupt other
players or benefit your own Tetris board.

This idea sounds pretty cool.

Yeah, I love tetris and wouldn't mind learning how to hack into a graphics only game.

Were you just suggesting this as a project or are you working this currently?

I'm also interested in this project.I'll take a look at a few of the
suggested API's(Web Audio, Canvas) later this evening and tomorrow
morning.
