Temporary Job Available: Census 2010

Chhaya CDC is seeking an outreach worker to be part of its Complete Count Census 2010 team.  Along with partner organizations Chhaya will be conducting census outreach in the South Asian communities of Queens, raising awareness about the importance of Census and encouraging people to participate. The workers will be part of a team and will be speaking to select Queens residents at their homes, as well as in public spaces and community events. This is an excellent opportunity for aspiring community/grassroots activists and leaders to gain valuable and direct field experience!

Qualifications:

·        Candidates must be available on weeknights (approximately 3 pm – 7 pm) and weekends from February 1^st through April 30^th, 2010.

·        Candidates must be bilingual in English, Bangla, Hindi, Nepali and/or Urdu;

·        Candidates must be mature and professional, with strong sense of ethics, propriety and interpersonal skills;

·        Candidates must feel comfortable with door knocking, public speaking and speaking to private residents;

·        Prior outreach and door-knocking experience is helpful;

Compensation: $15/hour, maximum 25 hours/week.

Based in Jackson Heights, Queens, New York - Chhaya CDC is a community organization that organizes, educates and offers one-on-one counseling to South Asians, new immigrants, and New York City residents in the areas of housing rights and civic participation.  Our work encompasses issues of tenant rights, homeownership, foreclosure prevention, housing rights, civic engagement, and affordable housing opportunities; and advocates for community needs through research and advocacy.  Our programs are offered in Bangla, English, Hindi, Nepali, Punjabi, and Urdu out of our offices in northwestern Queens as well as in public venues such as public libraries and local area community centers throughout the borough.
