September 2010

What’s been happening at Chhaya CDC? A whole lot!

Since our last update, Chhaya has worked to make history in Queens and beyond by expanding its programs and bringing on new staff. It’s our 10-year anniversary this fall, and 2010 is already proving to be our most impactful year yet.

Notable achievements have included:

  • Hosting a Foreclosure Rescue Fair in Jamaica, Queens
  • Surveying nearly 500 South Asian New Yorkers on their housing needs
  • Helping over 50 distressed Queens homeowners stay in their homes
  • Throwing our first ever block party in Jackson Heights as part of our 10-year anniversary celebrations

On August 7th 2010, Chhaya and its partner organizations, the Center for New York City Neighborhoods (CNYCN) and the Alliance for Stabilizing Our Communities, hosted a Foreclosure Rescue Fair at York College in Jamaica, Queens. The event was attended by nearly 1500 Queens residents and we assisted 760 households, making it one of the largest such events ever held in the area. The event was especially significant as Queens is said to be the epicenter of foreclosure rescue scams in the nation. Homeowners facing foreclosure were able to negotiate directly with representatives from their banks and lending institutions, and housing counselors and advocates were on hand to provide any support necessary--including translation in over 10 major languages. There was tremendous demand for housing counseling services at the fair--reflecting the homeowners' desire to work towards long-term, sustainable solutions for their financial hardship.

Needs Assessment Survey 2010:

This summer, with a team of researchers with language capabilities in Bangla, Gujarati, Hindi, Nepali, Punjabi, Sinhalese, Tibetan and Urdu, Chhaya surveyed nearly 500 South Asian residents of the 5 boroughs of New York City. This survey will guide program and organizational development over the coming five years, shape strategic planning, as well as aid the organization in developing priorities for policy advocacy. The goal of the research is to evaluate pressing housing and community conditions among South Asian immigrants, and by complementing Census 2010 data, provide an accurate assessment of where the community stands today. By analyzing rates of homeownership, rental affordability, transportation access, housing discrimination, and access to public benefits and subsidized housing-we hope to develop Chhaya’s strategic direction for the next decade, and hone our organizing strategies.  Stay tuned for information about the release of the report next year!

On July 25th, Chhaya hosted the first ever South Asian Arts and Activism Street Fair in Jackson Heights. The event brought together partner organizations, civic groups, city agencies and community leaders outside our office in Jackson Heights. There was great food, dazzling performances by Reena Shah, the Bangladesh Institute of Performing Arts and others, as well as opportunities to learn more about the important work various organizations are doing on behalf of New York City’s immigrant populations.
