Hello. My buddy and I are building his 59 El Camino. It has a 454
installed with big tube headers and we're currently working on getting
the steering setup. We were trying to use some standard steering
components along with a IDIDIT column but the clearance across the
header is just too tight.

Aside from beating on the header to provide more clearance, are there
better solutions for steering linkage? The steering box has a spacer
between it and frame. I was looking at doing a little shaving on the
bosses to angle the box towards the frame edge so there would be more
of angle on the linkage to get it away from the header.

It would be good to see some pictures of a setup if you have one
available. Thanks for your time!

Hello from the UK, Sounds like a call project, I am also building a 59 and am putting a 500 Cadillac engine in it as it is smaller in size than the big block Chevy. I made my own headers on my project and have taken them on the outside of the chassis rail's and tucked them down right next to the fire wall. I was going to ask about the steering but would like to install a rack and pinion set up so if anyone has done that I would be really interested in finding out what was used.
Thanks
Mick
