Hi All,

I am a newbee here. I am about to decide on buying a 1959 Biscayne 2
door hardtop here in Zimbabwe (Southern Africa). Like most of the
countries in this region, very few American cars are around in this
country as the British colonized most of these countries. British cars
are plently around while Japanese built cars dominate in sheer
numbers. This 59 Biscayne appears to be the only one left in this
country.

This car has been parked in a garage since 2002 when the original
owner left the country when his farm was invaded and occupied by
government-supported thugs. The car has not been started since then
but seems to be in a fairly good shape. It has an in-line six. The
engine turns.

I have a fair idea as to what to look for while buying a used car but
wonder if there is anything specific I should look for-when inspecting
and deciding on this car. The current owner wants
$ 2,000.

Urgent advice and suggestion from you all would be very helpful and
appreciated!

Cheers!
Anith

Hi Anith,
Your car is what is called a two door sedan rather than a hardtop. They
never produced a Biscayne hardtop in any year. Here's a link to a picture of
a two door hardtop -

and here's a two door sedan..
http://www.ctcautoranch.com/Cars/Chevrolet/1959%20Chevrolet%20Biscayne/1959%20Chevrolet%20Biscayne%205.JPG .
You'll notice that in the first picture, there when all of the side windows
are rolled down, there are no visible window frames on the body or door.
You will almost certainly find that the floors will need work as
Biscayne's all came with rubber floor mats rather than carpeting and as a
result of the rubber causing the metal to "sweat" ( form condensation ) or
water leaking into the car, the water can not escape and the result over
time is floor board rot. Also check the trunk floor for rust issues.. again,
a rubber mat installed at the factory usually resulted in rust problems.
Most sheet metal patches that you may need including floor and trunk
floor panels are available from after market sources. To the best of my
knowledge, parts are available for the 235 and they were a very reliable
engine - simple and uncluttered with hoses and belts and electronic junk..
and they are surprisingly easy on fuel. Interior kits are not available from
after market suppliers like Harmon's Chevrolets as far as I know for the
Biscayne's but I know that they can be bought for Impala's and I believe Bel
Air models. If you want to do a proper restoration, SMS - an upholstery
supply warehouse in Portland, Oregon, can reproduce any and all interior
upholstery - door panels, seat covers, headliners - for your car, and while
their workmanship is really good, it isn't cheap. I have seen seat and door
panel kits that they have produced and they do look good!
Feel free to email me directly at imp...@telus.net if I can be of
further assistance. I have a few '59's and have been a "fin fan" for most of
my 58 years. Respectfully, Gary

Gary do you know the best place to get tires for 59 Chevy's?
Nothing fancy.

Thanks Gary, you have been a great help!

I have a couple of questions:

1. What was the original carb on a 1959 Biscayne with in-line 6?
2. Did they assemble right hand drive Chevys in Australia? Tghe one I
have written earlier about is a RHD.

Cheers!
