Dear Neighbors,
I hope your summers are going well so far. I know that right now is a time of a lot of uncertainty and lately, what feels like a lot of bad news, so I hope you take some moments to take care of yourselves, check in on your neighbors, and find opportunities of joy when the challenges become overwhelming. If there is anything I can do, please reach out.
I am grateful to say I got to spend about a week in California visiting family and spending time making memories with them. It is not often we get the opportunity to do this with my extended family, but we really savored the time together.
If you aren’t aware, starting TOMORROW (Monday July 14, 2025), the trash schedule is being moved up. The News & Announcements went out last week - it will start promptly at 7AM (30 minutes earlier) but the official deadline for getting your trash to the curb remains 7:00 AM. This is being done to help our Public Works Team beat the heat as I’m sure you’ve noticed the temps have been a bit uncomfortable.
For my 63rd Place residents (as well as Joslyn and Cheverly Hills Court), we will be having a community conversation on 63rd Place on July 21 at 6pm, likely meeting around 63rd Place and Jason St. walking down towards Joslyn to discuss traffic calming devices for 63rd Place. The rain date will be July 23. I will have a flyer and reminder email I will send out again next week.
I wanted to provide a recap of the July Town Meeting. (Agenda can be found here.)
Eley Public Works Building Update: Keller team is on track to turn the building over in early August, with the town anticipating a ribbon-cutting ceremony planned for September. Until then, you will continue to see the fencing along the hill from Town Hall to Town Park to remain in place. A few big things that still remain to be completed are installation of gas lines by Washington Gas, the resurfacing of the track where sections were affected (full resurfacing remains a longer term goal), and the building use policy for the community spaces in the new building to be completed before use. All in all, we are moving ahead and hope to be in the new building by fall.
The Chair of the Ethics Commission provided an update on the commission’s current efforts. Their primary focus is developing a new internal governance document—an update that is long overdue, as the existing document has not been revised since 1991. Additionally, the commission will be working closely with the Town Attorney to ensure that the town’s ethics code aligns with Maryland state ethics requirements.
Town Administrator’s Report:
Mr. Galloway has been working with PEPCO to ensure collaboration during weather emergencies as we have seen many of our residents affected during these last few big storms.
Mr. Galloway has also been working on a few exciting things to come:
Walgreens - we are still trying to make contact with the owner of the property but at this time, the town is working to involve local stakeholders like the Economic Development Cooperation to bring what the residents may want to see. This means we will be working to have a community meeting in the future to have these discussions and to engage our residents on what they like to see come to that space.
Mr. Galloway is working on a Business Roundtable for local businesses in and around Cheverly, in collaboration with DPIE.
The Town of Cheverly will be offering a leadership program for residents to learn the ins and outs of municipal government and specifically how Cheverly operates.
The church in the old fourth ward has been condemned and the town has been working with the county on how to handle that building.
The Boyd Park playground is complete. The electric fencing for entry into the parking lot is still being worked on and is to come. So please stay tuned for that.
The Cheverly Community Center will be getting new gym floors soon thanks to Council Member Ivey and funds through a reimbursement program from MNCPPC. This should be done by the end of summer.
Cheverly Police Department will also be offering a Cheverly Police Academy for our residents to learn and be more informed about what our Police do and the policies that they follow.
Please continue to report to CPD about car rummages.
This month we will have 2 work sessions. July 24 is the regularly scheduled meeting and we are adding July 31 as an additional that will be VIRTUAL only.
