Hello! I created this Google Group to share information about Ward 3 and Cheverly. If you would like to be removed from this list, please use the unsubscribe link at the bottom of this email.
Hello Ward 3! A special shout out right at the top to everyone who helped make Cheverly Day such a great success! It was a beautiful day and it was so lovely to have neighbors and friends gather and celebrate all the good things about our town. It’s a small group of folks that achieve Herculean efforts, and we are so grateful to them for everything they do!
MEETINGS
September 26 Worksession
Agenda can be found here.
You can watch recordings of all town meetings here.
Audit
· The audit for FY24 is almost complete; the preliminary review we received indicated that the town is in excellent financial health.
· As in the past year or two; the high dollar amounts and long timeline of the construction of the new Public Works building has skewed the bottom line. Disregarding the budget activity related to that project, it is looking like the town finished FY24 $500k below budget.
· We should have the finalized audit this month.
Environmental Justice Action Team
· Tad Aburn, former Director of Air Quality at the Maryland Department of the Environment, presented on the background and recent work of the Cheverly Environmental Justice Action Team and the Cheverly Hyper-Local Air Quality Monitoring Network.
· If you have any interest in local air quality, I encourage you to watch the recording of this presentation. I learned so much! You can also check out this website for more information.
· The bottom line is that air quality in Cheverly has improved recently, thanks to the efforts of EJAT, the Air Quality Monitoring Network, UMD, MDE, EPA, and many other partners.
· But there is still much to do! You can help by reporting air pollutants or issues such as truck idling to MDE at 410-537-3215 or mde.we...@maryland.gov
Traffic Hot Spots
· We reviewed the traffic issues that were identified last year to discuss progress and next steps.
· While improvements have been made, we still have some outstanding requests such as new/repainted crosswalks on Cheverly Ave, Inwood, and 63rd Place; pedestrian safety measures at the intersection of 202/62nd/Monroe Street; and speed mitigation on Laurel and Parkway.
· If you know of an area in Ward 3 that you believe is in need of traffic calming measures, please let me know!
Policy Review
· Mayor & Council reviewed and discussed a draft of a policy concerning Mayor & Council attendance at conferences and other events, and mechanisms for ensuring that funds budgeted for these are distributed equitably.
· We also reviewed a draft policy creating a mechanism allowing town employees to bid on vehicles and other equipment that has reached the end of its useful life for the town. This would happen using the same platform through which members of the public bid on this kind of equipment; the policy simply gives staff a chance to bid on these items before the auction is opened to the general public.
· Final versions of these policies will be voted on at our next Town Meeting.
Odds and Ends
Other ongoing items to keep an eye on:
· Planning Board
o Interested in local development? Join the Planning Board!
o From the town website: “The Planning Board is a volunteer board of citizens of Cheverly who are approved and appointed by The Town Council. The Planning Board serves in an advisory role to The Council on various projects related to planning and development and other planning-related matters affecting the Town of Cheverly that come before The Council. The Board also actively makes recommendations to The Council for planning and development matters that positively impact the citizens of Cheverly.”
o The Planning Board usually meets on the first Tuesday of the month at 7:30 on Zoom, but this month they will be meeting on the second Tuesday (October 8).
o I know that Cheverly residents have a wide range of skills, expertise, and interests. If you’d like to put those to good use for the town with a reasonably small time commitment, please consider joining. Let me know if you are interested and I can connect you to Planning Board Chair Aimee Olivo.
· WSSC Work
o WSSC will be resuming their sewer work this week throughout Ward 3. This will impact Inwood, Parkway, Laurel, 64thAve, 63rd Ave, 63rd Place, Jason, Wayne, and Cheverly Park.
o As always, if there is an issue with their work, the first step is to contact WSSC directly:
§ Emergency Call Center: (301) 206-4002 or emergency...@wsscwater.com
§ David Wilkins, WSSC Customer Advocate: (301) 206-4371 or David....@wsscwater.com
§ Christopher Ball, Pipeline Construction Inspector: (202) 731-6850 or Christop...@wsscwater.com
§ Christopher Bush, WSSC Inspector: (202) 489-5681 or Christop...@wsscwater.com
o If there isn’t a satisfactory resolution, please be in touch with town staff and me so that we can follow up.
