Cheverly Council Updates:

January 2025 Meetings -

Stop Sign Cameras

You may have seen cameras at different areas in Town. These cameras are currently collecting data for future placement of stop sign cameras. Currently, none of these cameras are giving tickets and we will NOT be installing them until we have a public hearing first.

The Let's Drive Safer Program has launched in many municipalities around the county. This effort is to encourage safe driving, especially in areas near schools. As you know, I have been advocating for automated enforcement in and around town because reckless driving is getting out of hand. I am absolutely ok with these funds adding to our revenue and that violators see financial consequences that hopefully change behavior.

Areas near and in Ward 6 I have requested data to be collected:

Cheverly Oaks Court & Oakton Way

63rd Place and Joslyn Place

63rd Place and Jason Street

63rd Ave and Jason Street

Joslyn Place and 63rd Avenue

63rd & Kilmer

Forest & Parkway

I will update when the hearing is scheduled to occur.

Hospital HIll

Our next meeting we will have a Hospital Hill update. To learn more, please visit:  https://www.cheverly-md.gov/civicalerts.aspx?aid=263

Budget

We are entering budget season soon. As many of you are aware, the State is facing huge deficits and so is the County. I am unclear at this time how that will affect municipalities but it is something we need to keep in mind. Many of our neighbors are facing a lot of economic uncertainty and I believe it is important we look at the short and long term of what these challenges will do to our approach with the budget.

As many of you know, per the policy passed in order to get a triple A bond rating for the new Public Works building, we committed to a balanced budget for this year. To get there, it meant a planned tax rate increase. I, for one, do not want to increase taxes, but I also know that maintaining our triple A bond rating is important.

As Mayor & Council approach budget season, I do hope to hear from you and your ideas of where we can cut to decrease our expenditures. This will be vitally important as we look to  balance our budget and make sure our current revenue can cover those costs.  (send your suggestions to CMW...@cheverly-md.gov)

Hometown Heroes

Neighbor Gary Beale introduced a potential new program called Hometown Heroes. This program allows families to honor their loved ones with flags that display these veterans on them. We are currently exploring if putting these on our utility poles is a possibility.

Policy Working Group

Thanks to CM Bryner, CM Dalaker, and CM Garces for working on our policy regarding town organizations.  You can see drafts of these policies in the worksession supplemental material

Election Judges

Thanks to Ms. Rita Brown for serving again as the Ward 6 Election Judge. This was passed during a work session due to time constraints.

Town Administrator Updates:

Town Administrator has been working with the three major carriers regarding Cheverly cell phone coverage to identify solutions to the reception issues.

Kilmer Park Arboretum pedestrian path has been delayed due to costs and efforts to ensure the path is ADA. We will continue to work on a solution as we are committed to ensuring a path to Connect Wards 5 & 6 to the rest of the town.

As a reminder, there is a non-intervention ordinance that relates to CPD's obligation to assist ICE, please see the ordinance here
