Good Evening neighbors,

It's already February, and we are upon the Year of the Dragon, as the Lunar New Year is February 10th. In Korean culture, we call this day Seollal 설날 and celebrate it with specific foods and traditions. The lunar year 2024 is the year of the Blue Dragon, which is my Korean Zodiac sign, so I look forward to this coming year as a lucky one. So, I firstly want to wish everyone a Happy New Year 새해복 많이 받으세요.

February is Black History Month, and I know there are a lot of ways that we can acknowledge and celebrate the struggles, the gains, the victories, and the influence of Black Americans; I do invite everyone to tune into the Mt. Hope Commission's Black History Month Event that will start at 7 pm on February 10

Eley Building

Due to construction at the new William Eley Jr. Public Works Building, the Joel L. Lang Memorial Field parking lot and EV stations will be closed beginning Monday, February 12, 2024, at 7 am. Closure is expected to last approximately four weeks, weather permitting. The pavilion, field, park, and walking path will remain open and accessible.

Swear-Ins

Thursday's Town Hall meeting was a grand celebration as we swore in our inaugural Cheverly Youth Council after passing Vote 16 earlier this year. We also swore in 2 new officers to our CPD Team.

Hospital Hill

Just so you know, we had a Hospital Hill meeting where the developers presented their updated plan, which you can find here. You can watch the meeting here

The community-led survey is ready for all to take, so please submit your input here

The biggest issue is whether Cheverly roads should connect to the new development. This would be a change from the dead-end streets where the paper roads are not open. This development is currently under the County's control and not part of Cheverly, but the Town of Cheverly does desire to annex this development. While this may feel a long way away, economic development around our Town is critical to consider as we look at our tax base, increased deficits in the County and state, and inflation. Big-picture thinking is crucial while we go through every expenditure during the budget process that is upon us very soon.

Approved/Passed/Adopted

Cheverly Gives Back Grant promotes health, wellness, and community through its events for the town.

Black History Month Proclamation

Navy Special Warfare Operator First Class Christopher Chambers Proclamation recognizing his service and sacrifice

Resolution R-1-24 appointed the Board of Election Supervisors for a 2-year term. Thanks to David Thorpe, Constance Pruitt, and Anne-Claire Frank-Seisay for being willing to serve.

Council Compensation Schedule Ordinance 2023-04 changes how the Mayor and Council are paid. Instead of quarterly, it will move to the same system in which the Town staff is paid bi-weekly, streamlining the accounting process.

Other Updates:

202 Speed Cameras

Two temporary speed cameras have been placed on 202, one facing southbound traffic just east of Cheverly Avenue and one facing northbound traffic near 202 and Old Landover Road. They will begin issuing citations in the next week or two. Once we have confirmation from Pepco that these locations are acceptable, permanent cameras will replace the temporary ones. I hope these will help address some traffic and pedestrian safety issues along 202, which have resulted in multiple fatalities over the last six months. The town has also initiated the installation of red light cameras at intersections along Columbia Park Road at Route 50 and Cheverly Avenue.

Cheverly Camera/Wheel Lock Program

As a reminder, CPD offers rebates on home security cameras and wheel locks.  You can also get a steering wheel lock at the Police Department.

Pepco Survey

Pepco will have some equipment roaming the streets of Cheverly in the coming weeks to check on the condition of their underground stuff.

Redistricting

Following the results of the 2020 census, the boundary lines for wards in Cheverly need to be adjusted slightly, as seen in the Agenda Packet.  This redistricting will affect Ward 6 currently; how the wards are created cuts through "census blocks," which is not the advised way to create boundaries.

What will happen is that Forest Road from 6505 - 6459 Odd will all be Ward 6; the entire block of Woodway and Hillside on the Oddside will be in Ward 6.  If you follow the dark black outline, that will be what Ward 6 changes will be.
