Dear Neighbors,
Happy August! Quick updates on the two work sessions as we enter the last month of summer before back to school. There are a lot of cool events happening in August, so make sure to see what you want to participate in. From Scams and Fraud roundtable with States Attorney Tara Jackson to Boyd Park Ribbon Cutting and other meetings with our new District 5 County Council Member Shayla Adams-Stafford and PGCPS Board of Ed Rep Aimee Olivo, there is a lot to join. Check out the list of events at the bottom of this newsletter.

National Night Out is TOMORROW, August 5, 2025 at Cheverly Station Apartments (6400 block of Landover Road). This is Cheverly’s NNO event, so please come out and attend. It will be a lot of fun with food and fun activities with CPD.
I want to shout out the neighbors on 63rd Place, especially Liz, who got the petition turned around and completed within 48 hours. The goal was to address this issue before the school year started.
Unfortunately, the charter requires that the public hearing information be published in the monthly newsletter which has a content deadline of 15th of the month. The Town Administrator is working on getting this published in the September newsletter for a September hearing (likely the evening of the Town Meeting (9/11).
If you have any concerns about speed bumps being placed on 63rd place or would like to express support, please plan to attend (virtually or in-person), submit comment to the town clerk (gric...@cheverly-md.gov) or myself (af...@cheverly-md.gov) prior to the hearing so we can submit for the record.
WSSC - Many of the neighbors along 63rd Place, Cheverly Hills Court, Cheverly Oak Court. I am coordinating a community meeting with WSSC to ensure that all concerns from residents can be addressed before the project begins.
Hometown Heroes - this program has started and if you’d like to nominate a Hometown Hero, please check out the link for more information. If you do nominate someone, please let me know so I can be sure to support your request!
WMATA - WMATA has launched a new app showing real-time locations of buses and trains: https://wmata.com/initiatives/metropulse/index.cfm
MDOT - Representatives from MDOT / SHA came to discuss various efforts to mitigate the traffic issues we see on Landover Road (202) as well as Columbia Park Bridge area.
Pedestrian Signal at Cheverly Ave and 202 was requested well over a year ago. Currently, they are waiting funding to put this signal for pedestrians and bikers who traverse this area.
Signal at Old Landover Road and Landover Road has been approved and is currently in design
The 202 bike path from Kilmer to the Waterfront is going into a design phase soon. The goal is to get protected bike lanes that would be separate from the sidewalk to allow pedestrians to walk safely and bicyclists to be safe as well.
Columbia Park Road Red Light Signal - we are waiting on PEPCO for the electricity but the camera request has been approved.
62nd Place/Neighbor Lane & Landover Road - illegal left turns during school drop off time has been brought up (again) and they are going to look into it.
Cheverly Day - Thanks to the Cheverly Day Committee for providing this PowerPoint to look at what costs are incurred for Cheverly Day. This was part of my request to get a fuller understanding of what a Cheverly Day costs with the goal to advocate from our district County Council Member Adams- Stafford to receive a MNCPPC Project Charge. This would reimburse our costs for the event through MNCPPC and tax dollars that are allocated towards recreation programming.
Having a forecasted budget from year to year also allows the committee (all volunteer) to have reliable funding and the town to budget properly. Ensuring that the processes for the planning of Cheverly Day allow for institutional knowledge to be put into a standard process of procedures.
Cheverly Day Committee is always looking for more volunteers!
Ethics Ordinance - Board of Ethics is working to make sure that our town code mirrors and does not conflict the state’s ordinances. The first reader happened at the special work session. Please view it here.
Meeting Times - The Town Council has revisited the idea of changing meeting times for consistency but also to address other challenges with a 8pm Town Meeting start. Our town staff has very long Thursdays with the expectation of a normal start on Friday to serve the community. By starting a little earlier, this can also address the overtime that these Thursdays end up with. Beginning in September, all Town and Work Session meetings will start at 7:30 PM and continue to be hybrid.
Board of Elections - The board will begin meeting again starting in August and the second Tuesday of the Month at 7pm. They will focus on efforts to improve the experience overall after the very negative experiences that many went through in the last election. AGAIN, I truly appreciate the efforts of our volunteers who withstood such awful interactions with neighbors. I am hoping the experience is one where everyone can learn and realize that we each contribute to our community culture during good times AND tense times!
Kilmer/63rd Place Road Resurfacing - Thanks to CM Ivey and her efforts to improve the walkability near Spellman on 63rd Place/Kilmer near Spellman. The final parts of the project should be completed soon with the road resurfacing last week.
Difficulty at CSA - Council Member Garces and I have been working with Cheverly Station Apartments and some quality of life issues - including frequent loss of air conditioning. I want to shout out CM Garces for all his efforts and advocacy.
Cheverly Prom is on September 6. Get more info here.
