Dear Neighbor,
As you may have heard, the Town and CPD put out a media release earlier this week regarding our Cheverly Police Chief involved Shooting. As the press release indicates, the Maryland Office of the Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division is investigating the shooting. Any questions should be directed to the Town Administrator.
As of Oct 1., we are currently in the middle of a federal shut down. In the course of my day job, I was at the CEX Press Conference and also participated in Rep. Glenn Ivey’s Webinar on Wednesday. For those who have been impacted by what is happening, I am so sorry that you are dealing with this, and hope that I can be a resource in whatever ways I can during this really challenging time.

Recap September Work Session
Last Thursday, we had our town work session. It was a long one, but if you’d like to watch it, you can find the link here. Agenda can be found here
Here are some of the highlights:
Eley Building Update: The Ribbon Cutting for the William Eley, Jr. Public Works Building for the public at large was delayed; however, a small private ceremony did take place with the family.
The COO of Keller Construction joined us at the Work Session on Thursday to provide an update about the delays of the new building being complete. I was astonished to learn of these delays and support our Town Administrator and Public Works leadership to use every option available to ensure that these further delays do not occur. I, like you, have eagerly been waiting for delivery of this building and more eagerly awaiting the fencing to finally come down. It appears we will have to wait a little longer and I will provide further updates as I receive them.
EJAT & GIC
We had a visit from a group called “Environmental Justice Action Team” which is doing work in Cheverly and the general area with the Purple Air Quality Monitors and other environmental studies. After their presentation, which you can find in the agenda, the Green Infrastructure Committee joined our work session and stated they would be willing to work with the Town now.
I will not go into my opinion of what has occurred here but simply state that there is a governing resolution that has never been repealed. Resolution R-8-11 was adopted on October 13, 2011 with the intent that this would be a Mayor & Council authorized committee with members being added “as we go” per the Mayor, according to the minutes of this meeting.
I believe that resolutions the Mayor & Council adopt, whether it is during my tenure or before that, are binding documents that remain in effect until they are formally amended or repealed.
Whatever is the will of the Mayor & Council, we must follow the process and procedure.
Hospital Hill Info Request – The Cheverly Planning Board will make a recommendation to the Mayor & Council to present to the Hospital Hill Development Team on the Preliminary Plan of Subdivision.
Grant Request - A representative from the Community Native Planting Project (CNPP) will present the grant request.
Dave Kneipp, on behalf of CNPP, is requesting $2k to fund the Directors and Officers Insurance policy and general liability policy for the CNPP Board of Directors.
Youth Town Council Nominations - I was out of town for a big part of the application period, so if you have a 14year + old who is interested in learning about civic engagement, please let me know - cmw...@cheverly-md.gov and fill out this application https://cheverly-md.gov/637/Youth-Town-Council . Ward 6 must not go unrepresented, so please talk to your youth and consider having them join. The commitment isn't too much (one meeting a month) and our youth coordinator is fantastic.
Town Administrator Update – Town Administrator Galloway will provide a report to the Mayor and Council.
WSSC Update Tour was a success, where the General Manager of WSSC Keisha Powell joined Cheverly on a drive around town to some areas that were up for improvement. This is the second on-site visit from the WSSC team, and we do appreciate the collaboration.
I know many folks have asked me what is going on with the roads, and if you are noticing that the patching isn’t been resurfaced, it is because we are still waiting for WSSC to finish up some work before taking the next steps.
63rd Place received its traffic calming speed humps, and not too soon after the school year started. I am looking forward to hearing that speeding has decreased and we are seeing safer traffic conditions for our neighbors on 63rd Place.
Columbia Park Bridge Red light cameras are due to delays with PEPCO, but town leadership is in constant communication to try to make sure that they resolve these issues of delay so that the red light cameras can be installed.
State Street Church Update - Demolition will not happen now that the owners of the church have obtained a building permit.
The proposed Business Roundtable will likely be around November 12, but we will confirm once the date is finalized.
Sidewalk and Retaining Wall on 62nd Avenue - Thank you to CM Bryner for advocating so diligently for the pedestrian sidewalk in a place where it was so needed. This is an important improvement to safety in this corridor.
I also want to thank CM Ivey for bringing this request up at several SHA and DPW&T meetings in an effort to support CM Bryner’s request and see the need for traffic safety in this area.
Shout out to SHA as well fkr the assist on this project !
Police Safety Forum is scheduled for 11/18 at 6:30PM
Feel Good News - The Town received information about a displaced person living in a structure on 57th Avenue. After meeting the individual, CPD learned that the person just wanted to return home. The CPD and Code Compliance team provided him with a train ticket home, some food, and a little cash to hold him over until he made it there. I am grateful for such a compassionate public safety team that really puts people first.
Town Council Retreat is scheduled for November 7th and November 8th. This is something each new council does to help with team building, collaboration, and a refresh of our strategic plan.
Update by CM Fry & Garces Regarding Cheverly Station Apartments – I need to shout out CM Garces, who has been a tireless advocate for our neighbors at CSA. There have been several issues lately, none of which are too surprising or that haven’t been encountered before. That being said, CM Garces continues to be the voice for our residents at CSA, and I will continue to support my residents and his while we do our best to make sure that CSA is not just livable but a multi-family complex that treats each of our neighbors with dignity and respect.
