Join us for a quiet, grounding gathering to honor Juneteenth—a day of freedom, memory, and transformation. Amid the stress and noise of our present political moment, we invite you into a space of pause, reflection, and restoration.
The labyrinth on the grounds of Mount Hope—a place with deep and complex roots—will be open for silent walking meditation. In a time when much of our nation’s history is being suppressed, we are committed to mindful remembering. The labyrinth is an offering of space for all who are feeling the weight of disconnection, fear, and urgency. Come as you are. Leave what you must. Let the land remember with you.
Please stop by anytime between 11am and 1pm. To get to One Cheverly Circle, look for 2602 Cheverly Avenue, walk up the gravel driveway across from 2602, and look to the left. We will be there to greet you. Dress comfortably and be prepared for light walking or seated meditation. We have finger meditation guides for those who attend but choose not to walk the grounds. Hello Ward 3! Wishing everyone a joyful Pride Month and a meaningful Juneteenth this Thursday! Both proclamations were read at our Town Meeting last week, and hearing them served as a powerful reminder that Cheverly’s strength truly lies in our diversity—and in how we embrace and celebrate everyone who calls our town home.

Swearing In
She’s been with us for a little while, but Deputy Town Administrator Farana Abdul was officially sworn in Thursday night. Welcome, Farana!
Public Works Building Update
A representative from Keller Construction joined us to share that the opening of the Eley Public Works Building has been delayed until early August. While this is disappointing, the delays have primarily stemmed from permitting and utility work. A few notes:
-The fencing outside Town Hall, running down the hill to the building, will likely remain in place until the project is complete. Major utility lines are being installed from Forest Ave to the new building, and Washington Gas has not yet finished their work. We’ve made it clear to the contractor that we want the fencing down as soon as possible.
-Once construction wraps up, the track around the field will be restored to nearly its original length. Sections disrupted during construction will be replaced with appropriate walking/running material. Eventually, we hope to fully resurface the track.
-We’re very excited about the new community spaces on the second floor. However, these rooms won’t be available for immediate use. Public Works will need time to adjust to their new space and workflows before the community can access it. We appreciate your patience!
Home Town Heroes
Council approved the first six submissions for the Home Town Heroes program, and we’re hopeful the banners will be installed before July 4! Interested in participating? More information and the submission form is here: https://www.cheverly-md.gov/CivicAlerts.aspx?AID=472
FY26 Budget Ordinance
Council unanimously adopted the FY26 budget. The full budget document can be found here: https://www.cheverly-md.gov/DocumentCenter/View/1535/FY-2026-Draft-Budget-and-Capital-Improvement-Plan.
I'm incredibly grateful to our staff for working hard to keep expenses in check so that we didn’t need to raise the tax rate this year.
Rules of Procedure
Council unanimously adopted the Rules of Procedure for the 2025—2027 Council term. Other Approvals
-Council authorized staff to extend our contract with Bengal Engineers for on-call engineering services.
-We approved a plan for staff to use available FY25 funds to install an automated gate at Boyd Park. The goal is to prevent after-hours parking and deter criminal activity.
-Council also approved the use of Project Charge grant funding to replace the gym floor.
Departmental Reports
WMATA is changing bus routes! The town has been in touch with WMATA to clarify the changes and they are outlined here: https://www.cheverly-md.gov/CivicAlerts.aspx?AID=488
The Town is working with the County to finally install a sidewalk on 62nd Place between Landover Road and Monroe Street. Long-time readers may remember that this was one of the issues that inspired me to run for Council back in 2018. Because of the complicated grading and jurisdictional boundaries, this has been a long time coming—but we’re getting close!
CPD urges residents to secure vehicles to prevent rummaging. Please call 911 for any reports of a crime, suspicious activity, traffic hazards, medical emergencies, noise complaints, neighborhood disturbances, or crimes in progress. It’s important that these are logged through 911 and not reported directly to the CPD office.
Odds and Ends
Council does not hold work sessions in June (MML Conference) or August (summer recess). However, due to a packed agenda, we’re tentatively planning a second July work session for July 31.
I recently attended a WSSC Town Hall to advocate for better accountability following their sewer line work, which has caused compaction issues across town. We’ll be meeting with WSSC leadership soon to chart a path forward. Thank you for your continued patience as we push to avoid long-term paving issues like sinkholes.
Thank you to Dave Bowen and Cheverly Home Improvement for their masonry and iron work at the Kilmer Park and Arboretum entrance; it’s looking sharp!
Speaking of Kilmer Park: Public Works has been hard at work improving the pond to make it both more attractive and a healthy habitat for the fish that live there. A new solar-powered filtration system was recently installed, but unfortunately, staff have had to repair it multiple times due to damage. Children have been seen pulling out the tubing and trying to fish with nets.
Just to be clear: it is not appropriate to wade in the pond, attempt to catch the fish, or touch the filtration system. Please make sure everyone in your household understands these guidelines. It’s a beautiful spot, and we’d like to keep it that way without placing an ongoing burden on town staff. Thanks for your help in taking care of it.
