Tuesday, Nov 4 at 12:00pm: Federal and Furloughed Workers Resource Fair
This past month has flown by, and it is hard to believe how quickly this year is coming to a close. I know many of our neighbors are struggling or bracing for challenges in light of the shutdown, on top of everything else happening in our country. Some families are facing unimaginable circumstances, while others are living with uncertainty about the careers they’ve dedicated decades to.
I wish I had all the answers, but like many of you, I share in the daily worry about where we are headed and how best I can serve as a resource and support. Please know that where I can be helpful, I will be. If you need assistance, reach out and let me know.
Federal Worker Resource Fair
On November 4, there will be a Federal Worker Resource Fair at Town Hall starting at 12:30 p.m. Elected officials at every level in Maryland have been working hard to connect residents with the information and resources they need. There is no perfect way to reach everyone, so I am grateful that we continue to work together to amplify those efforts.
You can find additional resources from Congressman Ivey’s Office, the State of Maryland, and Prince George’s County.
October Town Updates (you can watch the meeting here and view the agenda here. )
Property Tax Exemption for Disabled Veterans
A big thank you to a friend/neighbor who asked whether the federal property tax exemption for 100% permanently disabled veterans applies to county and municipal taxes. The answer is yes. Federal law exempts 100% permanently disabled veterans from property taxes at the state, county, and municipal levels.
Thank you to our Town Administrator for confirming this and ensuring that this information will be clearly posted on the town website. To our veterans, we thank you deeply for your service.
Budget Update
Ms. Diane Mock shared that our audits show the FY25 projected deficit is close to what was originally budgeted. While we did have to raise taxes for the FY25 budget, I am grateful that we are not too far in the red, especially given the financial uncertainty across the county right now.
New Local Restaurant
We have a new restaurant in town! The Chop Up and Coola Lounge, located near the laundromat and Mi Pueblita Bakery, offers African cuisine from Cheverly neighbors who are now local business owners. I encourage everyone to stop by and show support.
They joined us at the October worksession to request support for a liquor license after the previous establishment closed. As I mentioned at the work session, our county needs more sit-down restaurants and local businesses. I am proud to see residents investing in our community and helping it thrive, especially our immigrant neighbors who continue to be part of the beautiful tapestry of our county.
Eley Building Update
We have been informed by the COO that the new expected delivery date is early December. The delays are due to permits and utility connections.
Leaf Pickup
Leaf pickup season is beginning soon! Please keep an eye on Cheverly News & Announcements and the town newsletter for the full schedule. The pickup schedule can change quickly, so I’ve asked the Town to notify residents as early as possible when adjustments are made.
You can also stay updated by checking the Leaf Vacuum Collection Program Page and signing up for News & Announcements notifications.
