Hello neighbors,
It is summertime: longer days and crazy heat. I hope everyone is staying cool and enjoying these longer days. I have enjoyed seeing kids walking or riding bikes around and folks in the community. Please remind your kids to use the crosswalks and to be careful on our streets. The driving around our county has been a bit frightening, and the disregard for pedestrians is frightening.
Thanks to Brownie Troop 22029 for coming to the Town meeting and bravely advocating for repairs of the swings at Town Park. I love that they came with an issue, had ideas to fix it, offered to help fundraise, and gave many reasons as to why it was needed.
BIG UPDATE: Council Chair Jolene Ivey's office informed the Town that Gladys Noon Spellman will be getting sidewalks in the unincorporated area near the school off Kilmer and 63rd Avenue. Please take a look at the yellow highlights as a general estimate of where the work will be done. On the North side of those streets, there will be some curb and gutter work as well.
A town hall for the community is being planned for the evening of July 22nd at GNS. Please keep an eye out for updated flyers. We are working with Cheverly Station Apartments and Gladys Noon Spellman to allow for daytime parking during the construction period for the neighbors affected by construction. The hope is to have it ready by the beginning of the coming school year.
BIG UPDATE: Speed cameras on Columbia Park Road are up. SLOW DOWN. Do NOT run red lights. We are still waiting on the red light cameras but were encouraged to hear that SHA would help us expedite these cameras as they are very aware of the issue.
- On July 3, Council Chair Ivey's office organized an SHA & DPW&T meeting and invited Cheverly to join. During this meeting, we discussed different ideas to fix the situation with the timing of the lights, the illegal merging, red light running, turns, etc, that occurred right in front of us. Despite police officers enforcing in the area, the second that they vacated the area, cars began their illegal behavior. At one point, both the Chief and assistant chief were on foot, pulling cars over. BIG SHOUTOUT to CPD for the work they are doing in the area down there for enforcement!
Two other important meetings happened on June 28.
- The Mayor and Town Administrator toured the Joseph Smith & Sons recycling plant. The experience was positive, and the update was that there will be more meetings on-site in the future, which I hope to be invited to.
- WSSC did an on-site visit through Cheverly to see the list of complaints and concerns that the Town has been reporting for over a year now. The update from here is that the General Manager who attended now fully understands the severity of our complaints and is trying to work with us to resolve them. HUGE SHOUTOUT to Public Works Director Brayman for his relentless reporting and the research he did to lay out the full scope of the issue.
Don't forget that there is a Hospital Hill community meeting on July 16 with recommendations from the Town Traffic Engineer, Jack Goode. The timeline right now anticipates that the Preliminary Plan of Subdivision will be submitted by the end of July.
A Cat's Life Rescue - Cheverly Cats Branch has begun TNR and Vaccines in our town. Please reach out if you are aware of any colonies in our town. We want to make sure that they are being taken care of.
