Whenever your vent run goes through its first wall or a ceiling all components from that point on are required to be Class A double or triple wall stainless steel. Galvanized components may be allowed to be used on the interior of the home, but it is always recommended to refer to the appliance manual to determine the proper size and style of venting that is required. We also offer the 6 inch by 60 inch DuraTech Galvanized pipe section as well.
Every chimney pipe manufacturer prohibits the mixing of different brands of chimney pipe. For this reason each brand creates a slightly different connection locking system for securing pipe components to each other and if used with a different brand these connections will not be fit properly and will not offer a secure fit.
Nearly all venting manufacturer's do not label their pipe, so if you do not know what brand of venting you have, this means that most often you have to replace the entire vent system. While this can be a costly expense, it is the safest option. One insecure connection could lead to a chimney fire and this can result in not only property damage but also loss of life for you or a loved one. This is why chimney venting safety is so important.
It is important to plan out your entire vent run before purchasing any components. We offer a handy Chimney Wizard to help you figure out all the chimney sections and components that you need for your vent project.
It is important to have as few seams as possible in your run. Seams refer to the joints where your venting components join together. There are several advantages and benefits of having fewer seams including:
The other thing to keep in mind when considering the components of your vent run is what is approved for use in your area. You and your installer will want to check with local and state codes as well as review the manual for your appliance. The manual will list all of the requirements for the venting system.

We get many questions daily about the size of "pipe" as compared to "tube", for anyone not familiar with the differences this can become very confusing. Many people refer to all round, hollow metals as "pipe", when in fact "pipe" and "tube" are two completely different products and as industry standards go, the fittings and sizes are completely different.
Tubing sizes are listed as "Outside Diameter (OD) and Wall Thickness (W). Listed sizes of tubes are exact, a 1 inch "tube" will measure 1 inch on the OD. The "Inside Diameter" (ID) will become smaller as the wall thickness increases.
*If your terra cotta clay flue is in bad shape at the top, you may
need to just take a hammer and tap all around that terra cotta,
taking it away to make the surface flat at the top of your chimney.
In that case, you will simply use the flat top plate that comes with
our liner kit.
Usually pellet stoves have an exhaust hole id of 3 inches. However, if you are going up more than 15 feet to the top of your chimney you need to use a pipe and/or flex liner that is 4 inches diameter.
If you are only venting a hot water heater then the exhaust hole diameter is probably 3 inch diameter. If it is 3 inch diameter and you are going up more than 15 feet to the top of your chimney, you must use a 4 inch diameter flexible liner or ridged pipe for proper draft. We also suggest to go ahead and use a 4 inch diameter flexible liner or ridged pipe even if the total length is 15 feet or less.
Most gas log fireplaces require an 8 inch liner kit or rigid kit. But do not assume that is the case for the gas log fireplace kit you are installing. Obey the requirements for that specific unit that are in your installation/instruction manual.
Remove your crushed oval-shaped stock down pipe and replace it with a smooth, round, long-lasting full 304 stainless steel down pipe from PPE. Includes a woven titanium sleeve to reduce engine bay temperatures.
The cast and machined flanges are of quality I wouldn't want to hide under a clamp. They blend well with the pipe and would appear to have good flow characteristics. Everything fit right up as it should. I did end up needing to add a third hose clamp to the middle of the wrap to keep it from sliding down the pipe.

i recently took a weld test on 2" sch 40 stainless pipe in the 6g position and failed. i haven't done a lot of stainless welding. i used 3/32 tungsten and tig wire.
i was told i had a lot of undercut in the weld which is why i failed. i need help on any tips to pass this test. what amperage should i use? i was welding on 50 amps. should i turn it up after the feather edge is melted away with the root pass?
the fixture used to hold the pipe is a piece of angle iron, what is the best way to make sure i have a uniform gap? thanks
--------------------------------------------------
Jared,
yes you should probably increase the amperage after the root pass. probably to around 65 for the second pass and up to around 70-80 for the rest.
to get a uniform gap, you can use 1/8 wire and pull it out after the first tack and then eyeball it to make sure it stays even.
you may even want to leave the wire spacers in until after the second tack is done 180 degrees from the first tack weld.
i usually make some spacers out of weld wire and just grind the sides flat so that after tacking , i can just turn the spacer a little and it pulls right out.
it will be hard to get the wire out .
if your undercut was on the cover pass try using a tighter arc and really watching the edge of the bead as you go to make sure it fills.
make sure and let the pipe cool between passes.
getting in a hurry is what kills most stainless welding tests.
good luck,
jody
