Benry is an enigmatic character who follows the PoV character, Gordon, being generally unhelpful and spouting insane bullshit. Very early on in the series, he casually drops the fact that he is not human and as a result he is regarded as an anomaly. Benry is the final villain in the series, whose reason for being evil is explained through a nonsensical speech about video games.

Most of the 4th wall blurring (and outright breaking) by far is from Dr. Coomer, but Benry has his moments. He may or may not be fully aware of his fictional nature the way Coomer is (and given Benry's characterization if he does fully know, he probably doesn't care) but he certainly seems to have some amount of deeper understanding of and ability to control the nature of their reality.

Benry has very strange powers. He uses the "Black Mesa Sweet Voice" which involves shooting colored orbs out of his mouth and creates a sound described by other characters in the series as singing, to seemingly be able to control other people. He can also come back from the dead, which is later revealed to be due to the presence of passports; when the passports are destroyed, Benry can be killed, supposedly. He grows massively in size and shapeshifts into different forms during the final act, demonstrating abilities in bending time and space by clipping through walls and seemingly manipulating portals, and is the only person other than Gordon who can see the G-man. Benry acts very casually about his powers and never explains how he got them.

During a Q&A stream, Wayneradiotv (the streamer who played Gordon Freeman and whose point of view HLVR:AI is recorded from) stated that Benry "is lusting after Gordon the whole [...] series" but that his affections are not reciprocated, confirming that Benry is canonically attracted to men. Benry also makes romantic advances towards Gordon in the series, for example kissing him and saying that he is "likin' the view from back here" when crawling behind Gordon though a vent.

In his final boss fight in Xen Benry enters a powerful state in which he grows massive and his body contorts violently, summoning skeletons, flying through walls, and screaming the sweet voice everywhere, replacing the Nihilanth in its chamber as the final boss of Half-Life. The science team must destroy the Passports to cut Benry off from his source of power and make him mortal.

Benry is associated with skeletons, who keep appearing throughout the series, usually while he is not there. It is up to interpretation what his relationship to the skeletons is; at one point, he speaks from the mouth of a skeleton, and he uses skeletons as minions of a sort in his final battle.

Benry is the final antagonist of the series, turning on the rest of the party after following them off and on throughout the series. His stated reason for causing the resonance cascade is that Gordon had a dick slip that morning and disrupted his ability to work.

Despite not being the case in-game, fan art of Benry typically portrays him with the top half of his face shadowed by his helmet, while leaving his eyes completely visible. This has lead to more art putting emphasis on his eyes by giving him more than two, for a more monstrous appearance. This fanon interpretation has been used by wayneradiotv (the streamer who created the series) on an official plushie which was launched on Makeship. The Benry plushie has the characteristic shadow over the top half of his face, and the whites of his eyes are blue.

As mentioned above, Benry is heavily associated with gaming, specifically PlayStation and Heavenly Sword, in his fanon interpretation, despite the fact that he doesn't really mention anything like this until act 4 (Heavenly Sword is mentioned only in his villain speech where the whole idea is that nothing in it makes sense). While playing his character, Benry's actor Scorpy apparently was just playing himself, and he was only talking about PS+ in act 4 because his real-life PS+ subscription had just run out and he wanted a free month.[1]

Benrey's main canon deviations are due to the fandom's variety of headcanons as to his design. Despite being literally the Half-Life 1 security guard, common fan interpretations include giving him sharp teeth, yellow or red eyes, and gray or blue skin. Benrey is also often represented as an alien, whereas in the series it is just stated that he is inhuman.

Benry's personality in fanon also deviates to enhance his Gamer aesthetic, although that wasn't really an aspect of his canon personality until act 4, when he started asking people if they had PlayStation Plus. Most other fanon deviations surround his relationship with (HLVR:AI) Gordon Freeman, which most make romantic.

Due to awareness of the sexyman phenomena, fans actively worked against the sexymanficiation of Benry and stuck close to canon. However as the fandom has grown the fans have started to relax and open up to different interpretations of Benry. It's now common for fanon to go all-out and make Benry a full-on eldritch abomination rather than just monster features, some to the point of using body-horror in their works.

He has been depicted glowing blue, a trait similar to some interpretations of Sans. Benry is somewhat "Sans-like," sharing similar personalities, a blue motif, and similarities in fan interpretations. However, Benry's popularity is much smaller than that of Sans.
