8 months. 9,000 miles. 48 states. 1 bicycle.
Bike for Obama is taking to the streets in support of
President Barack Obama’s re-election.
Bike For Obama is an ambitious 8 month, 9,000 mile bike ride to each of the lower 48 states in support of President Obama. With the goal of encouraging and inspiring others to participate in the Obama re-election campaign as well, Bike for Obama will be volunteering in each state visited and staying with local democrats the whole way.
In the last U.S. presidential election Barak Obama was elected with the help of an unprecedented number of volunteers working at the grassroots level for their candidate and their country. With the impressive level of active participation and enthusiasm generated in 2008 in mind, experienced cycle tourer and dedicated Democrat Ellery Althaus conceived of Bike For Obama after returning home from a 10,000 mile bicycle tour across Asia and Europe. While doing that ride Althaus “realized that bike touring was such a great way of connecting with people that it could be more than just an adventure, it could be a way of getting involved as well… an organizational tool.”
The core of Bike for Obama is connecting with Democrats nationally both by biking from state to state and volunteering for the President’s campaign along the way. Throughout the country Bike for Obama will be:
● Canvassing neighborhoods, helping with phone banks, and fundraising for the Obama campaign
● Encouraging fellow Democrats to get involved in this crucial election cycle
● Raising funds for the President online at www.bikeforobama.com
● Sharing stories from the road across America on www.bikeforobama.com
Starting March 17th in Brattlboro, VT and ending on election day, November 6 in Washington D.C., Bike for Obama encourages anyone to come out and ride, be it for a day, a week or even a month. “The more people riding with me, the more successful Bike For Obama can be at helping the President,” Althaus explains, “We need to regain that enthusiasm and sense of commitment that we had in 2008, when people weren't just voting for Change, they were willing to work for it. Riding a bicycle for 8 months,… Bike For Obama hopes to remind Democrats of their part.”
The Kickoff Rally will be a ride from Brattleboro to Keene on Saturday March 17th at 10am at Pliny Park. Althaus will attend a rally before riding with friends, family and local Democrats to Keene NH where they will meet more local Democrats for a 1pm canvas event in Keene, meeting at Central Square.
