to Chesapeake Seaplanes

Hello all Aquatic Flyers, Seaplane Lovers and Regular Pilots, too!

On behalf of Helen Woods, Chesapeake Sport Pilot and all of you who enjoy salt water and Chesapeake Bay blue crabs, the annual Cambridge Hyatt splash-in is on for SATURDAY, AUGUST 17, one week after Don Maxwell’s “Late Fall” splash-in at his wonderful home on the James River.  HIGH tide at the Cambridge Hyatt is forecast for 12:48 PM, but will only range about 1.5 ft. There is plenty of water to land outside the marina breakwater in any direction.  There is plenty of water inside the marina breakwater to taxi.  You should have plenty of beach for your amphib or float plane.  RAIN DATE is the following SATURDAY, AUGUST 24.

The Hyatt is a premier resort-vacation retreat on the Bay and is always busy at this time of year.  There will be lots of people about, including dozens who are interested in talking to you about your airplane and flying!

I suggest you arrive by 11:00 AM, with people gathering talk and have lunch around noon.  We have had as many as five aircraft up on the beach with others tied up within wading distance just off the beach.  If you can’t float, you can land at Cambridge Airport KCGE  (RWY 16-34, 4477’ x 75’ asphalt), about two miles south-east of the Hyatt.  The approach end of Runway 16 is one mile from the Hyatt and the approach to 16 flies directly over the Hyatt.  Uber will get you to the Hyatt quickly.

The Hyatt has the beach and the Bay to swim in, but most folks opt for one of the two large Hyatt pools overlooking the marina and beach where we park.  Excellent places to cool off! Food is available from the Hyatt at several outside and inside locations, and is always delicious. The scenery and the ambiance is as good as it gets, and the Hyatt extends its hospitality at all who arrive by land or by sea. If you wish to stay overnight please book early, as the Hyatt is a one of the best resort-vacation spots on the Bay and this is their high season.  I’ve left my plane parked on the beach overnight, no problem.

Do remember, if you do splash in the Bay, afterwards thoroughly wash your plane using a special detergent such as “Salt Away” specifically designed to remove salt once you get back to home base.  I also fog and treat every surface, nut, bolt, and the entire engine of my Searey with ACR-50 each year as part of the annual. If you’re done with your salt water for the year, this would be a great time to use Corrosion X, ACR-50 or other similar treatments right after a Salt Away bath.

Last year we had a demonstration floating dock, but it will not be back.  We also planned last year to see an Icon demonstrator, but they were delayed due to mechanical issues.  We’ll call and give them another invite.  We’re still in the discussion mode about having the Hyatt registered as a private seaplane base.  Hopefully we’ll have more news on that at the Splash-In.
